Theres not much difference between RPG's and writing stories really. The only difference is that in RPG's there's more than one person and you have all got to work together to make a good story. It has problems; someone could not be online, post in the wrong thread or at the wrong time, the list is endless. At least in a story you are on your own so can do it under your own steam and if its what you are thinking then whos to say its wrong? So whats to stop you? Go for it!
