Movie discussion thread

I noticed that we have a music thread, book thread, game thread, etc. but we do not yet have a general movie thread.  So I make one.   big_smile

My movie critiques: Coraline and The Last Sin Eater.
I feel Tim Burton did quite a good job on Coraline, but there were some bits from the book that I really missed, like the 'we are small but we are many' mouse chant.  And for God's sake leave that nuisance Wybie out of the movie.  The only purpose he serves is to make Coraline look like a total spoiled brat, and to get her name wrong.  Also there could have been a little more emphasis on 'scary' and 'creepy' in the second half.  But overall it was a decent book-to-movie transfer.  They did a really excellent job on the mouse circus and the garden.  Mr. Bobinski was very funny, but I liked better how in the book Coraline didn't call him by his name until the very end, and that's when he got her name right.  But I'm just being picky now.

The Last Sin Eater:  It's hard to understand at first.  You just have to keep watching it, and you'll figure out how everything ties together eventually.  The movie is about a girl, Cardie, who was there when her sister died, and feels responsible, and everyone blames her for her sister's death.  She tries to rid herself of the guilt, and makes friends with a preacher and a boy with an abusive father, while trying to discover the secret of the Sin Eater.  It's a very good plotline, very suspenseful and mysterious.  You'll especially like it if you're religious.  The Irish accents make the dialogue a little hard to understand at times but you can get the gist of what they're saying.  I loved the ending.

Please post your own movie reviews and suggestions here. big_smile

Re: Movie discussion thread

I recently watched an animation movie from India called Roadside Romeo. I like the animation job in it.

Re: Movie discussion thread

I made a film thread a while back but it's died now.  sad R.I.P...

Anyway, I'm gonna see Harry Potter tomorrow with my dad. I hope it's better than Order of the Phoenix. It should be, all the reviews have been OK.

Re: Movie discussion thread

I saw Orphan and personally found it to be both interesting and shocking. In my opinion the little girl brought new meaning to the term "disturbed" and "mental".

Re: Movie discussion thread

Yeah HP was pretty good, I thought. Sad though. Can't wait for the next one. Apparently they're gonna do the Deathly Hallows in two parts because there's so much to fit in. I hope they're released at similar times.

Re: Movie discussion thread

I recently watched Coraline and it's freaky as all heck. I didn't read the book, so I can't make any comparisons on that.

Also watched Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last weekend. Was pretty good for what a 2.5 hour movie could do with what the book had to offer.

Re: Movie discussion thread

The Coraline trailer scarred me for life.
I didn't go to the theatre for months after that trailer came on before a movie I was seeing.

Re: Movie discussion thread

Hurt Locker is a movie worth seeing.

It's about an EOD [Explosives Ordinance Disposal] team in Iraq. It's
very ... different from other movies. The feel is similar to Castaway,
where there is less dialouge and music.

The main point about the movie is to show the viewer what it's like to be
an EOD in the Army.

A few warnings. It can get graphical.
