Re: Military Vehicles

In WWII, Germans could make armored land vehicles and machine/submachine guns better than any other country... But other then that? They were sort of outclassed in technology...

Their anti-tank infantry weapons were taken from the American Bazooka.

Their grenades were based off of Russia's.

Heck they wouldn't even have planes if it wasn't for America and Britain.

They had alot of good technology, infact they discovered how to make a computer to calculate artillery strikes before anyone else... But you must consider everything else they got later in the war that we had earlier. Take radar for example. One of the most powerful spy and scouting tools ever. Yet Germany did not get this until a few months after the Allies started using it.

EDIT: Sorry, please replace all words that say German with Nazi. Germany wasn't the enemy, Nazis were...

Sorry to correct you, but the Germans lost because they made too FEW tanks. While most countries make many cheap vehicles, Germany chose quality over quantity. In other words, they prefer to make a few nice vehicles over making a lot of cheap vehicles.

Re: Military Vehicles

Look at it from this perspective if you will...

You have Germany which had an army size of around 16 million serving after they broke from the treaty installed upon them during WW1, they made roughly 1,355 Tiger Tanks. They made another 8,870 Panzer IV tanks in all of its different models.

Compare that to fighting against over a production line of 60,000 Sherman Tanks, another 57,000 T-34 Tanks from the Russians, a smaller gather of English armour (The vast majority of them being Shermans given to them by the Americans) and Idk roughtly 12,350,000 American Soldiers backed up by the production of 250,000,000 workers at home, 23.6 million Russians at THAT START of the war, it was 49.5 million at the end of it all, backed up by that population of 600,000,000.

The German Aircraft was second to none in all aspects, the BF-109 served on all fronts effectively until the Luftwaffe as a hole was smashed by Hitler's idiocy at the Battle of Britain. The Fockwolfs and ME-262 were revolutionary designs as well. The 262 could have again changed the war had Hitler used them as attack planes instead of trying to convert them to bombers.

The German U-boats scared the Allied nations as a whole the entire war, forcing them to up their convoys, and their Battleships at their highpoint were unmatched, (The best being the Bismark, was only sunk due to a very lucky hit on its rear rudder by a torpedo from a biplane).

All and all the German Army man for man was perhaps the finest army the walked the Earth. Had they had proper military leadership and not had to fight off pretty much the entire world, it's completely possible that things would have changed for the worse.

Not to mention the V-1 and V-2 rockets that were developed too late to make a huge difference. I think one of my favorite examples had to be some lucky American who only described the German SS troops (The Elites) as "The perfect killing machines. Willing to die for their cause and country without  a second thought." And another from a commander of a Sherman tank...."We would only go against a Tiger if we had a group of 10 tanks or more, and even then we usually wouldn't win. We shot at it....it bounced off....they shot at us......it didn't bounce off."

Despite how they accessed the technology or whatnot before the war, they knew how to manipulate it perfectly to do their bidding, and they knew how to apply it to total war. Be thankful that Rommel wasn't in complete control of the Axis powers during that time.

The real scary thing about all the comparisons above is that the Germans STILL almost won.

Re: Military Vehicles

I am not saying Germany didn't have good military vehicles, they were great. They invented the military U-Boat (submarines for those who don't know history) and had great armored vehicles. Yet they took most of their technology from other countries, such as infantry anti-tank weapons. They took the RAFs fighter designs, and they took radar. Of course they made all those things better quality, but they took original designs from most other countries.

Things like the tank and computer, they invented of course. And they made it with good quality, but those other things above were not their original invention.

Re: Military Vehicles

And at the end of my nice rant I said that I was well aware they took several technologies, but they built upon them better then any of their original owners did. Despite how they attained the tech the Germans knew how to wield it and wield it correctly.

Re: Military Vehicles

That is true, but regardless, they lost the war, even though they had better tanks than the Americans at the time (today we have tanks that could and would destroy any other tank in existence today).

Re: Military Vehicles

Well yeah obviously 40 years of technology does make a difference. I don't care that they lost the war only that they managed to hold off pretty much the whole world for five years and still almost win with what they had.

Re: Military Vehicles

Jumping late to the fray here, but I don't think I have 10 military items that I like but I will post those that I do.

C-130 Spectre Gunship
A-10 Warthog
Hummer (original's not the SUVesque civilian versions)
"Dora" the 800mm railway based cannon.
SR71 Blackbird
Predator drones
something less modern the trebuchet

and lastly

though not a military tech, I imagine it might have been funded as research for something military. I think it was called the HARP gun. Give that a google.

Yes if you want to know I'm 1/4 German. I don't find anything wrong with that. I respect them in WW2 for their strategic values in several characters and their ability to wage warfare. Any military historian would do the same.

Re: Military Vehicles

me262 = sexiest plane ever

IJN Yamato = manliest ship ever

P 1000 Ratte = most baddass tank ever big_smile. (i can't seem to find any pics of the P1800 but meh...)

@ RedDragonX totally agree with you on Germany, look at Rommel or manstein. Both amazing commaders and highly respected (although not sure bout manstein). Yes the Germans had the best tech but not sure bout the best ideas. Look at the T-34/85 or the bloody insane Is-2 going to be IS-3 that the soviets fielded, they would definetely outdone the Germans in the long run (which is what happened wink) because of costs.

And that HARP gun just fails when compared to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerer_Gustav yikes

Re: Military Vehicles

The point there is that the Russians had the 600 million people living in there country to back that kind of production up. The King Tiger could have gone par on par with the IS tanks pretty easily, but only about 150 were made if if that, I just admire the fact that they were still able to hold off attacks from both sides against most of the nations in the world and still almost win.

You have to actually attempt to include some kind of intelligent thought when you're posting so you have to put down a certain amount of words for it to be not considered spam.

Re: Military Vehicles

My favorite military vehicles are the M1 Abrams tank and the F-22 Raptor. Too bad the F-22 is getting replaced by the F-35.
