Re: Left-handed or right-handed?
Does anyone know how someone (I assume you're born with it) becomes right, left handed, or ambidextrous? Or is it just when you're like a toddler and you just starting using your motor skills pretty much?

Re: Left-handed or right-handed?
As far as I can remember, its slightly to do with genetics, and slightly to do with how you are raised. When you're born you will automatically prefer to use one hand over another, something to do with the genes you inherit I think. But, if you are raised to use one hand over another, then you will obviously become accustomed to using that hand. That's why there used to be just about no left-handed people. It used to be associated with the devil, so people weren't allowed to be left-handed. If a toddler seemed to prefer using their left hand then their parents would make them use their right.

Re: Left-handed or right-handed?
Thanks Phoenix and A_Guy. I don't wanna like ruin the topic, but is there any reason why these things that I've noticed happen:
1. People who are left-handed almost always have good handwriting
2. Left-handed seems to be more common for girls

Re: Left-handed or right-handed?
Lol, I'm left-handed and my writing is terrible! 'Cause I used to make my homework on the floor or on the bed. I would be right-handed if I wouldn't have got that surgery of my right thumb when I was baby. Btw, there's one bad side with writing with left hand: the led or the colour (whatever comes from what you use to write or color) colours the side of my hand while writing/colouring.

Re: Left-handed or right-handed?
I have no idea if its more common for girls than boys. But I do know that whichever hand you write with has absolutely nothing to do with how neat you are. I'm really neat at writing, and I'm right-handed. I have a friend who is very neat and is left-handed. But I see people who are both right and left-handed who have atrocious writing! XD There is one thing I do notice though. Girls tend to have better hand-writing than boys! Though, saying that, I did know a boy who had gorgeous handwriting!

EclipsedMoon is probably right, Wikipedia says that left handedness is more common in females than males (ok I know Wiki isn't always accurate). It has other interesting facts, such as only 7-10% of the population is left handed, and intelligent people are over-represented in left-handedness... (click here for source.)
Wikipedia: "Though constituting less than 10% of the general population, 66% of U.S presidents in the last thirty years have been left-handed, including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Barack Obama and John McCain also happen to be left-handed. Left-handed people tend to be overrepresented in among the most intelligent and successful, as well as in Mensa. They include the likes of Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Pablo Picasso, Benjamin Franklin and others."
Also, a travelling tip: when visiting developing countries, especially in the Middle East, DON'T shake their left hand. [link]

Re: Left-handed or right-handed?
FUN FACT:
the arm of the hand opposite the one you write with is usually stronger than the other.

Is it really? I don't think that's how it is with me.
Maybe my arms are just messed up.
Anyways, I'm a righty.
