Re: Oh man rap music

OK, I really dislike rap, but there are some things you guys are missing:
- It IS music. Less melodically perhaps, but there's rhythm for the most part. People often get the misconception that music without melody or much musical instruments cannot be considered a song, which is false. You guys really need to "listen" to John Cage's music (i.e. NO instruments or vocals so you basically hear nothing, but it's still considered music).
- I'm not a spokesperson for rap music, but people like rap music (hip hop more generally) because of the lyrics that are conveyed throughout the song, and how those lyrics are conveyed (e.g. by an addicting rhythm). It might be a story, a polical statement, or something just plain silly (and often crude).

edit: listen to John Cage's song called 4'33". I don't need to give you the mp3 for it because you are essentially listening to it.

Ah, the famous song of silence. I remember learning about that song in music theory.
Makes me think of the movie August Rush ...

Re: Oh man rap music

one of my favorite rap-type songs is Linkin Park's "Hands Held High" It has a really strong message about how the world works today. And I don't mind a little bit of swearing in a song, but when a song is nothing but cursing, that's just ridiculous.

My history teacher said that the first rap was I guy with one of those giant stereo's on his shoulder saying "Fab 5 freddy from outer space" over and over again.

Re: Oh man rap music

Rap as a genre I don't mind, but the new "Gansta" rap is the kind I don't like. Last year, my school did this Christmas play and they had a rapping part for the African Christmas part (or whatever it is called, I forgot)...I liked it cause I knew it wasn't about something bad. And I think Hip Hop and Rap are the same thing according to Midnight Club 3 because it lets you select the genre you want to hear from Rock, Hip Hop, Techno, Rythem and Beat, and something else...but that's my opinion that they're the same thing.

So DPX, if techno/electronic is the same as rap, then is this rap?
No, it's not.
I really dislike it when people think that techno/electronica is the same as rap.  Because it's not.

There could be a melding of two or more genres. Rap with techno flavor, ya know?

No, Atresac is just pointing out the stereotypical generalization that you made about rap music. I'm sure there are plenty of songs with very good lyrics; rap has just gotten a bad "rap" (haha) from songs that have a ton of profanity.

I've just got to say that this sentence made me lol because of how blatantly racist your school's play apparently was.  lmfao

I agree, rap music IS probably one of the most immoral styles of music entertainment. if you would call it a style.

1) Are you kidding?  They're speaking in pretty much a normal voice without any distortion to their voices.  It's actually easier to understand than most rock music you hear on the radio these days.
2) Are you sure it's that or do you just like to take lyrics at face value?
3) Holy stereotypes batman!

A genre can't be immoral.  It's not like a musical genre is sacrificing babies or eating goats.

And it is a style, are you dense?

Um, Atresac, you can't force people to like it because you have a different opinion than others. T__T

Re: Oh man rap music

I'm not trying to get them to like it.  Honestly I don't care if people "like" it.

It's just the sheer ignorance that pretty much everyone on the forum displays.  "It's not a real style of music," or "all they do is just swear the whole time and talk about drugs and guns".  It's like "wow are you that much of an ingrate?"

ie:

DarkMaster wrote:

It is a type of music in the strictest sense of the term, how people can actually say this and believe what they're saying is beyond me.
