They really shouldn't put the Olypics in Bejing.

Re: CountDown for Beijing Olympics
Yeah. There's been tons of talk about this. They're simply giving China a chance to change their reputation. Everyone thinks of it as a bad place. Now they've been given an opportunity to change that. It'll be interesting.

Re: CountDown for Beijing Olympics
The Olympic committee must've chosen Beijing for a reason for the better. Right now, the current events in China (specifically Tibet) is kinda ruining China's already damaged reputation on government affairs. So as Spyro_Loves_Me said, we'll see if hosting the Olympics could be socially and economically beneficial to China.

Why? Because you've been told that its a bad place? China is a country in the world that competed with other countries for the right to have the Olympics and they won; I can see no reason why they shouldn't.
Yes, they are communist. Yes, they are a dictatorship. Yes, China is a craphole. Still no reason why they shouldn't host the Olympics.

Re: CountDown for Beijing Olympics
Well with the Olympics in China, there will probably be a significant loss in participants and fans since they know how bad of a place it is. A good example for this would be the 1936 Olympics hosted my Nazi Germany under the rule of Adolf Hitler. I also think that was the same summer when one of the American competitors was cheated out by a German competitor.
A lot of athletes are complaining about the air too. I mean, Beijing does have the most polluted air in the world. It may not affect them too much, but it sure is unattractive to the athletes and spectators.
And then you have to think about all the factories that have to be shut down. And all the homeless who have to be put in the jails. And all the stray animals who will be killed and put into pounds. Even land is being evicted from people.
All this work just to look good for once. I really do hope things turn out the best though. I want the Olympics to look good. And China's rep can't get any worse than it already is ...

Tsk tsk tsk... Okay, it's like swimming in a swimming pool with gobs of spit in it. EEEWW! And since sports is all about being healthy (I run from school to home sometimes), it's no good trying to be healthy in an unhealthy environment. Makes no sense.
P.S: Sorry if that paragraph is off... It's 12:22 AM and I'm going to sleep.

Re: CountDown for Beijing Olympics
I certainly can attest to the fact that Beijing has some of the worst quality air since I've been there before. I can't imagine how someone with asthma could live there comfortably at all. It's like you're bathed completely in thick vehicle exhaust.
Anyways, keep in mind that Olympic bids on which city will be the next host is determined many years before the actual games begin, so no one really predicted stuff like the current events happening in China today (considering China's general attitude however, I wouldn't be surprised that such events are happening). If a bid was to take place now, maybe China wouldn't win.
Perhaps also that China's incredibly strong economy made hosting the Olympics in Beijing seem more plausible.
