Re: I'm having an exam :-!
Task 1: London Bridge
The section on London bridge is about the bridges story and long lifetime. London bridge is one of the most famous bridges that ever reached over the river Thames. Its structure and astonishing looks have impressed many nations, but it’s often mistaken for the Tower Bridge, and thus often brings confusion to tourists and visitors. London Bridge was sold to America, and is now a huge attraction in the state of Arizona. The story of the bridge is quite interesting, and it’s the main reason to why the bridge is so incredibly famous. The bridge has been built in stone, wood and solid concrete.
London bridge have been broken down and rebuilt multiple times. The bridge was first built by the Romans for more than 1000 years ago, it was built in wood. Though the bridge wasn’t as resistive and strong as the Romans thought, as a matter of fact London was raided in the year 1013AD, and as a result of this, London bridge was brought to ruins. The bridge was repaired soon thereafter. A bridge in stone was built under the reign of King John about 500 years later. Many houses and shops was built on the stone bridge, and it survived the great fire of London in 1666. Today there’s multiple bridges which reaches over the river Thames, some of these bridges are very old while as others are quite new. But there is no real London Bridge in London.
Task 2: How I worked
I worked with the section on Bridging the gap. This was a good choice because I myself have been to London, and the phrase “Mind the gap†is frequently used in the tube systems. The section was mainly about the other meanings the word bridge could have. To build a bridge can either be translated as building a bridge like in the general term or to open a channel between two individuals. It can also mean to make friends, or connect generations. The section was very easy to read and thus making it easy to learn.
I worked with this section in various ways. I first read through all of the sections and picked out the one I found most interesting. Once I had chosen the right section I read it carefully and remembered small words and phrases, like key words and such. I noted down on a paper I had by my side words I didn’t fully understand and tried to connect them with other sentences, this way I could get a simple meaning out of the words. Of course there wasn’t many complete farfetched words, but some of them just didn’t make any sense at first. I read through the text twice and in the end listened to the soundtrack as I checked my E-mail. I’m usually lurking around English web pages which is a good way to work with my English.Task 3: Part B
A bridge to Glimmer
Summary: Charlotte is a young girl who lives at an old people’s home administrated by her grandmother. Charlotte’s parents died in a car accident when she was five, and she was only lucky to survive the crash. She works as a maid and don’t have much spare time. Her best friend at the home is old mister Fritz. Mr. Fritz is quite a story teller, and often tells many strange and funny stories. The old people’s home is very close to the sea. It’s very beautiful and silent there. During the heavy storms they have to evacuate into an underground channel underneath the house. Fritz have told Charlotte many strange stories about the underground channels, one of them is about a bridge which leads to another realm. Fritz is a funny old man, and almost no one takes him seriously, but Charlotte does, she believes there’s some truth in the old geezers stories. Charlottes grandmother rarely have time for small chit-chats with Charlotte, but she says that it’s strictly forbidden to remain in the underground when it’s not an emergency. Charlotte soon learned that there was more to the underground than just brick walls and slimy floors, she found a bridge leading to Glimmer. And an immense journey laid in front of her.
Chapter 1:
- â€Mister Fritz?â€
Charlotte screamed as she was half-way running through the old people’s home. She was dressed in an over sized 18th century maids dress and her shoes was way to small. She almost tripped in the carpet, as the dress was heavy to drag along.
- â€Fritz?â€
She said and opened the door to the ladies room. She peeked inside looking for the old man. Mr. Fritz was known to be quite a lady watcher.
- â€Come on in Charlotte, I want to show you somfin’…!â€
A voice said. It most defiantly sounded like old mister Fritz. Charlotte walked into the ladies room slowly and looked around. The ladies was in the shower, and mister Fritz was no where to be seen. Charlotte walked around the toilets looking for mister Fritz. Was he in the ladies room peeking again? And there he was, on top of the trash bin, peeking down on the ladies in the shower.
-Mister Fritz!! How many times have I told you not to look on the ladies when they’re in the shower? Old misses Hearing is going to have a fit again. And you know how grumpy grandma ’ll get if she tell her… You shouldn’t even be HERE!
Mister Fritz looked down on Charlotte and smiled.
- â€Don’t be such a party pooper Charlotte, look, misses Hearing is sick today… And you won’t tell anyone now would you?!â€
Old mister Fritz clapped his hands and stared over at the old raisins in the shower. Charlotte quickly turned around and pretended as she hadn’t heard what Fritz had just said and left the room. But she couldn’t avoid smiling, as she found mister Fritz as a very funny old man.
Later the same day, all of the people at the boarding home gathered around the television in the grand living room. This was known as one of the main highlights of the day. The pensioners was born long before the telly and thus it was incredible spacey and new for them. Although, the programs they liked to watch was mostly old movies and garden magazines. Charlotte was working at the kitchen at the time, just two more hours and she could retire for the day. Old mister Fritz was probably still in the ladies room, he tend to stay there all day on Thursdays, any other day for that matter.
- â€Are you having fun Hun’?â€
Charlotte jumped up as two ice cold hands touched her shoulders. She accidentally threw a plate in the wall and glass shards flied in every direction. She also broke a light bulb with the plate, but it wasn’t really working anyways.
- â€Careful with those meh lil’ pallychum… You might just hurt someone’.â€
Mr. Fritz said.
- â€Oh! Fritz… you scared me!â€
Charlotte looked annoyed upon poor old mister Fritz. Yeah, poor mister Fritz, he got a box on the ear for that. A huge red mark in fact, straight across the face. Mister Fritz smiled and laughed.
- â€I have somfin’ for you gal…â€
Mister Fritz took his old cold hands and reached for his pocket.
- â€What is it?â€
Charlotte said as Mister Fritz picked something out of his pocket.
- â€It somfin’ precious given to me by your parents.â€
Fritz took something that looked like a necklace out of his pocket
- â€Did you know my parents?â€
Charlotte said and reached for the necklace.
- â€If I knew them? Of course I did meh lil’ pall chum. Me and your father was very close you see, we went to high school together…â€
Mister Fritz said and laughed. Charlotte looked suspiciously upon mister Fritz, and laughed.
- â€Good joke mister Fritz! So not funny!â€
She took the necklace and fasted it around her neck.
- â€It’s so pretty… How did you get it!â€
Charlotte smiled. The necklace was made by silver pearls and had ruby red medallion in its centre. There was some strange symbols around the red stone, almost as hieroglyphs or runes.
- â€I told you, it was given to me by your parents, they gave it to me a week before they perished. You see that stone in the centre is the key to a realm far away.â€
Fritz pointed at the ruby red stone.
- â€Me and your father went to high school together. One day we came over this little medallion laying at the principles office.â€
Fritz smiled and stepped a bit closer too Charlotte.
- †Haha! But that’s impossible… You are way older than dad, even older than gran-gran. Were you his teacher or somfin’… you’re such a funny old lad…â€
Mister Fritz laughed once more.
- â€Nope… I think you’ll find out about that soon enough.â€
Fritz looked a little clever as he smiled. Mister Fritz was such a strange old man, you really couldn’t take him seriously all the time.
- â€Tonight, at about 2am, dress up in your everyday clothes and go to the underground, bring the medallion with you.â€
Mister Fritz said and touched the medallion with his finger. Charlotte looked oddly upon the strange old man.
- â€Bu…!â€
Charlotte couldn’t finish her sentence before odd old mister Fritz was gone, it was like he just disapeared. He probably touched the medallion to attract it attention, and sneaked out the door while she was looking at it. If she wasn’t mistaking, mister Fritz was probably still in the room. Charlotte couldn’t get much sense out of the mans words, and she didn’t quite understand everything either. Was that maybe the point?
The rest of the day Charlotte was walking around the corridors of the house looking for mister Fritz again. But he was no where to be seen. Charlotte looked in every single room in the house, and she even asked the other pensioners to help her. But odd old mister Fritz was nowhere to be seen. It was like he’d just disappeared right in front of them. The search continued until the sun went down. The other pensioners had given up looking a long time ago and went to bed. They told Charlotte not to worry, Mister Fritz usually disappeared on Thursdays, and any other day for that matter.
Charlotte retired to her quarters the same evening. But she couldn’t sleep. She was thinking about what Fritz had told her, her parents, the medallion and the bridge to another realm. She was looking at the amulet and the strange symbols around the stone. It almost looked as if it was a dog and a cat in the symbols, but many of the other symbols was completely foreign to her. She had decided a couple of hours ago that she wanted to walk down in the underground channels, but she wasn’t completely sure what to look for. Probably mister Fritz was hiding down there, he has been seen down in the tunnels before. She stood up from the bed and took on her slippers. She dressed up in some simple everyday clothes and silently went outside. The corridors seemed so dark and hollow at this time at night. Charlotte sneaked across the corridors trying to see where she was going. It was like a never ending cave of complete darkness.
Charlotte walked through the darkness reaching the little hatch that led down to the tunnels. The hatch was made by iron, and opening it was incredibly heavy and hard. She eventually slammed the hatch down on the side, making a hollow metal sound across the corridors. The ladder down to the tunnels was wet and slippery and she almost fell down a couple of times.
- â€Then I was here…â€
Charlotte said to her self. The tunnels were even darker then the corridors in the house, and there was no light anywhere. Charlotte could barely see as she fumbled through the narrow corridors, not completely sure what she was looking for. She was looking for some kind of bridge, but everything could be a bridge in these pitch dark tunnels.
Step by step Charlotte silently took through the slimy underground. The sounds of her slippers dragging along the slimy floor gave her a freezing cold feeling. It was like she stepped on a fish or a dead animal for every step she took. She couldn’t see where she was going, but she hoped the bridge was made by some sort of metal, so that she could hear the difference once she stepped on it. She was looking for a metal like sound.
Squish, squish, squash, squish… The everlasting sound of snails being squashed underneath her feat filled the halls. Charlotte kept walking, she had no clue weather she was walking in circles or not, she was just hoping to find a new ladder or some sort of metallic sound. Squish squish…
There didn’t seem to be any end to the hollow corridors. But then it happened. clonk. The squishing had changed to a more pleasant sound. Metallic. She stepped a bit further forward, to make sure that the clonks continued. And they did. Clonk, clonk, clonk. It sounded a bit like the pipes in the kitchen really. Charlotte walked further across the metal like floor, and in the far she could see a faint light. She slowly breathed in and started to run against the light. clonk, clonk, clonk. further and further, faster and faster, closer and closer. A big grin went across her face. She was finally out of the ever lasting corridors. Ever long. But her feet didn’t seem to keep up with her rhythm anymore, the slippers was very hard to run in. She tripped in something big, almost like a oil keg. Charlotte flied across the metal floor and crash landed in a pipe in front of her. She lost consciousness immediately.
- Charlotte…?
A voice said.
- Are you there?
The voice was getting loader. Charlotte slowly opened her eyes. She was blinded at first by a tremendous light.
- where am I?
Charlotte asked and tried to get used to the light. All she could see was an old raisin like face smiling to her. Mister Fritz. His face was more comforting to see now than ever before.
- You, my girl, is at…
Charlotte stood up and looked around here, she hadn’t gotten used to the light yet. Her legs was like jelly and she could barely stand up. The metal floor seemed to still be underneath her. Mister Fritz took her in the hand and pointed in front of her.
- You are at the bridge to Glimmer.
Charlotte was amazed by the view that hit her eyes. A rusty metal bridge stretching far into the horizon. Around the bridge was a green ocean which seemed to be very full of life. It was in the middle of the night, but Charlotte could clearly see a red big morning sun where the bridge disappeared. She gazed long into the horizon. The scenery was just to pretty.
- Where does it lead?
Charlotte said and smiled to mister Fritz. She couldn’t believe her own eyes.
- Didn’t I just tell you my dear?
The old man said.
- It leads to Glimmer. And that little amulet of yours is the thing that will take you there.
Mister Fritz smiled gently to Charlotte. A comforting smile, perfect for the scenery that surrounded them. It was like a perfect painting. Red and blue, twisted. There wasn’t much time for explanations mister Fritz said, and Charlotte was soon standing on the bridge waving back to him. The old man waved back and smiled.
Charlotte took the first steps towards the horizon, it was going to be a long journey. Across the bridge that leads to Glimmer, it seemed to be ever long. As we all know, the horizons never end, but there might just be something in reward if you get closer to it. Charlotte looked around her, the fresh ocean breeze was like a dream. Everything was. Old Fritz disappeared behind her, and soon she seemed to be in the middle of a bridge, in the middle of nowhere. A bridge leading to Glimmer. And what a beautiful journey it would be.
