Weird PS2 controller glitch?

Whenever i try to play an early PS2 game from around its launch-2004, like ETD or CNK a weird glitch happens with my controllers and i vatiety of issues happen with each one, like with my main controller the X button is always activated, but when i put in a game made later on, such as a heros tail or the legend games, they work just fine.
I have tried taking the memory card out an putting it back in, and my controller ports seem just fine, any idea what i should do?

have you tried playing around with the X button itself? i've had a problem for years now where L3 stays "always activated" until i dig my fingernail around it for a minute.

Yeah, nothing changes, and its happened with all my controllers in different places until I switch to a newer game.
