My old dentist is on the national news
Anyone heard about the dentist who shot a lion in Zimbabwe? He was my dentist a few years ago. My sister's friend lives near him and can see people protesting at his house and "prancing around for the media." The dentist's website and Facebook page are down, and people are leaving negative reviews and sending him death threats. The office was even shut down for the day. I'm still on their mailing list for some reason and got an email about the situation.
Kind of surreal.

wow, that is... weird.
i was "on the local news" when i was really young because my school was doing a charity thing and the station filmed me putting money in a bucket, or something.
but never for anything crazy like that. i hope i never end up being one of the people who knows the person.
but i'm curious, what does it feel like?

Well, he did it legally and he was not aware of how well-known the lion was. To be honest, his hired buddies seem to be the problem here since they knew the area more.
And yea, expect the obsessed animal lovers to over-react to a situation like this.

Really weird, yeah.
The guy always seemed nice enough to me. My mom is now saying she always had a weird feeling about him, but she was shocked when she heard the news.

I agree that they're overreacting for sure. Apparently he's hunted other large, endangered animals before, and no one cared much because they weren't well-known endangered animals. They're just being melodramatic so they can feel like brave activists or whatever. 99% of them don't actually care and wouldn't really want him to be tortured and eaten by lions (or at least I hope they wouldn't).
That said, I don't think it's right that he did this, regardless of legality. But that's a whole other topic that we don't have to get into. ![]()

Hate to keep picking on you, but I seem to disagree with pretty much everything you post.
The argument of "why aren't people outraged about all the other injustices in the world!?" just doesn't work. People are mad about poverty, cruelty, etc, but those acts are much farther away and less black and white. People jumped all over this story because it was really easy to hate this guy. He's a rich dentist who illegally killed a well known endangered animal. It's much easier to direct hate towards a single individual rather than something abstract like a group of people, a country, a political policy, etc. I do think that with the internet, petitions and hate were vastly overblown, however.
TL;DR: People do care about other important problems. It's just easier to lash out at a single person. Not saying it's right, but that's just the reality of things.
I also don't understand the hate for people wanting to protect animals. It seems like it should just be a moral obligation to at least care for the other creatures on this earth, but maybe that's just me.

It wasn't done legally...that's part of the reason why he is catching so much heat for this. Regardless of whether he thought it was legal, that fact is that the lion was lured from an animal sanctuary and then they tried to destroy its GPS collar afterwards. But I do agree that his guides to deserve some of the blame.

Because they put animals over themself. Their selfish nature is a disgrace in compared to try and fix real issues instead of the hippie nature of self hating humans that exists.

How is putting something or someone over oneself being selfish? Human activity truly has messed up a lot of earth's nature, it is a real issue. A very few may perhaps to some degree resent humanity as a whole for this, while most probably just are angry at the individuals who actively and for fun or personal profit do particularly bad things against animals or nature. And like Paranoia said, when they also become publicly visible, they're easier to hate. People are passionate about different things, some care a lot about nature or animals. It doesn't mean they don't want to also fix issues like poverty - most likely, they do. It's just that human suffering appear so often that we in a way become deaf and blind to it, and therefore don't jump up angry at every incident, even if there is a single guilty individual. The more shocking cases are an exception, of course.
