Anyone following the internal drama on reddit?

Post explaining the subreddit bans and "censorship"
Post explaining the employee firing situation

I go to reddit for a couple of communities, but I don't care for the community as a whole, so I'm kind of enjoying sitting back and watching the arguments unfold. It seems to me like pretty much everyone is at fault all around here, which makes it all the more entertaining.

After FatPeopleHate and the others were banned, reddit users complained about censorship and free speech. Many decided to express this by flooding the front page with *bleep*posts and screaming for the resignation of the CEO. Reddit is a private company and can ban whatever it chooses, and I would have banned these hate "communities" long ago. They were being ridiculous. But on the other hand, the way the admins handled it could have been better. The admins claimed to be banning "behavior, not ideas," but subreddits that regularly engage in blatant downvote brigades (ie, SRS and SubredditDrama) are apparently fine. No good reason was given by the admins about why they singled out the ones they did and left other hateful, violent, and racist communities alone.

As for the employee firing, it's really not anyone's business why anyone was fired, but it definitely sounds like the admins communicated poorly with the moderators who relied on this Victoria person. And firing the guy with cancer after telling him he could start working again in the next few weeks obviously seems pretty unethical.

Then there's the practice of shadowbanning, wherein a user's comments can be hidden from the site without their knowledge. This was originally supposed to be a technique for combatting spam. Rather than banning the spammer, who would just make a new account instantly, the spam account can be shadowbanned so that the account can continue posting, but no one will see any spam. But now shadowbanning is being used on regular users of reddit. One guy claims to have been shadowbanned for three years, wondering why no one ever voted on or replied to his comments, before finally figuring it out. No one ever knows why they were shadowbanned, either, but a lot of rumors have been going around, again, because the admins haven't been communicating with the users.

Any opinions on this? I don't know if anyone here even uses reddit. tongue

I've always wondered, what is it about Youtube that makes the comments so terrible? I really don't get it. I mean, you could upload an adorable video of a kitten and a puppy playing, and an argument about religion would break out somehow. roll

Reddit and 4chan are poison to people ... I have no problem with staying away from that stuff. I had a Skype/Steam friend who I played games with and he'd go AFK for 20 min often... and I later found out he just went on 4chan and started looking at images and videos and junk. It annoyed the heck out of me so I removed him from my contacts.

I go on there sometimes but just for news about pro wrestling, and info about video games. I have no idea what's happening nor do I care. But I hope everything turns out okay. For them.

Same here! SquaredCircle? One of the better subs. Too many Vince / HHH apologists, but overall, probably the best location to talk wrestling.

Re: Anyone following the internal drama on reddit?

Ah, yes, the best part was where almost every subreddit I frequented had to assure its members that they would not be shutting down in protest. Oh, well, it would've been almost impossible for Ellen Pao to remain CEO without people assuming a conflict of interest in any censorship measure she took, with the whole court case.

Re: Anyone following the internal drama on reddit?

I admit I was biased towards not liking her because of the court case stuff, but by the end of the whole thing I actually felt bad for her.

The blackout was so pointless, lol. Trying to make a statement about the importance of content providers, but only protesting for one day? Pretty weak on their parts. I guess they got what they wanted in the end, though, so they'll probably just assume their "activism" was the cause. "We did it, Reddit!" roll
