Speedrunning

Has anyone ever attempted to speedrun any of the Spyro games? I just downloaded a split timer today and decided to run Spyro 1 for the first time, since it's the game I know best. Unfortunately, after Peace Keepers I decided to take a break, forgetting that you have to save on the dragon platforms rather than the game just autosaving. tongue I was able to get 100% of the gems, dragons, and eggs in the Artisans and Peace Keepers worlds in about 44 minutes (there's of course a LOT of room for improvement due to the gem placement and stuff). I'm hoping I'll be able to run through the entire game sometime this weekend maybe.

Just curious if anyone else has tried to speedrun of any of the games? Or if not, maybe this thread might convince you to try it out! It seems like a lot of fun. I'm hoping to be able to record my playthrough and put it up on Youtube, more for my sake than anything else, but maybe some of you might find it interesting, so I thought I'd share.

Re: Speedrunning

I actually follow speedrunners on twitch, and I know several of the best Spyro speedrunners. I have learned quite a bit from watching them, including that Spyro 2 can be completed in less than 10 minutes o_0

Re: Speedrunning

o_o How is that possible? I would think the loading screens alone would collectively take about half that time, at least.

Re: Speedrunning

It was probably just an any percent run, basically just beat the game as fast as possible. I'm assuming they used some sort of glitch  (probably swimming in air or something) to get to Ripto quickly. Still pretty insane though.

I've watched a couple speedrunners on Twitch, but I haven't seen any Spyro ones before.

Re: Speedrunning

If I remember correctly, what they did was use a bug in summer forest to skip straight to Crush, use another bug to get straight to Gulp, then in Winter Forest, they used a bug to go to Dragon Shores before you're supposed to (I forgot why) and then use yet another bug to get to Ripto early. Basically, most of the run is boss battles.

Re: Speedrunning

I played through and completed Spyro 1 in one sitting once, and it took me about five hours.

Re: Speedrunning

I've considered doing it before. I once did a speed run once of Glimmer, but that's about it.

Re: Speedrunning

Thanks for the link! I see that you're pretty close to WR on the 120% run.

Unfortunately I haven't had much time to try any more speedruns for a while due to school, work and all that, but I'm sure I'll have some free time this summer when school is out of the picture (yay for graduation). Pretty sure my best time for 120% was around 2 hours, 40 minutes or so. Definitely not optimized at all though, lol.

Re: Speedrunning

My first run of 120% was 2:37 so a 2:40 is really good, especially without a route. It's a pretty fun watch and lots of cool people in the community, would love to see more people getting involved in it.

Re: Speedrunning

Yeah for sure. I actually wasn't aware there was an active community around such an old game...that's pretty cool. I'm always watching streams on Twitch so I gave you a follow there. Hopefully I can get to trying more runs soon.

Re: Speedrunning

Yeh, I'm ParanoiaRebirth on Twitch so if you ever see me in chat (though I generally lurk), that's me. tongue Hopefully I can figure out a way to stream myself after I'm done with school, but it seems like it's kind of an investment to get streaming and recording software.

Re: Speedrunning

The only thing you need to video capture from console is a capture card like a Dazzle DVC100 or GV-USB2, then an s-video/composite cable or composite with splitter cables. The software to record/stream is free, most people use Open Broadcaster Software (or OBS). I remember when I bought my Dazzle, I found a decent used one for about $30, then the s-video cable was about $10. So it wasn't bad at all.

Re: Speedrunning

I know that some speedrunners use emulators, however the more dedicated ones usually have a capture card, because the timing for loading screens and such is always recorded using the original console, or something like that. Most emulators will allow you to run games through your disc drive, too, so you don't have to illegally download .iso files. I always play using an emulator, because it's just easier. Plus I can play using my gamepad's analog sticks.

Re: Speedrunning

Emulators aren't completely accurate and have slower loads; sometimes they're discouraged, especially certain versions. For the original trilogy speedruns, PS2 is always superior.

Re: Speedrunning

What's the reason PS2 is the best? Fastest loading times? I would only be able to use a PS1 or PS3

Re: Speedrunning

Our little Spyro community on YouTube used to have speedrunning tournaments. It began on a channel titled "Spyro Speedruns". These days, a few of those people from the community started taking it real seriously. Guys like Rabidwombatjr/FahrenheitFrenzy and Crash41596 originated from that community. Same with ThaRixer (Jak speedrunner) and PeteThePlayer. Good times. I myself am pretty *bleep*y at speedruns, but they used to be good fun and we always had great Skype calls.

I'm relatively new to speedrunning, but I'm already fairly decent at it.

Re: Speedrunning

When I say I'm not very good, I more meant regarding Spyro and Crash. Like I know pretty much all the glitches, but I don't play the games super-fast and effectively. The tournaments I won were for Disney and Gex. But you're right, there is a tournament going on right now, and it's for Insomniac and Naughty Dog. You guys could check it out.

Re: Speedrunning

Well i don't think of Spyro in terms of Speedrunning. It just feels like i am rushing instead of exploring. But is chill that people enjoy this and that ^ _ ^
