New Computer
I just got a shiny new iMac as a late Christmas gift/Valentine's Day gift from KingLambda.
I really like it so far, but I have very little experience with Macs, so everything seems a little confusing. Anyone want to give me advice (of the non-"go buy a PC" variety because it's a little too late for that now
)?
And while we're at it, what kind of computer(s) do you have?

I love keyboard shortcuts, but I'm not quite used to them here yet. It's command+c, command+v, not control, *bleep*! ![]()

Re: New Computer
You can still run a Virtual Machine if you want to run a program in a Windows environment.

I've tried one of those before. I can't learn to love it. It's weird moving your finger to select something that doesn't appear on the trackpad.

Re: New Computer
My mouse actually has some gesture capabilities. I thought I was going to hate it at first because the default cursor speed was really low, but I found the option to change it.

Re: New Computer
I've always liked windows more, but there was a time where I had to use a mac as a temporary computer, so I know some about them. Best advice I can give you is that cmd+alt+escape opens the force quit menu, which is really, really useful.
I'm not sorry if I offended you.

Re: New Computer
Thanks Flapjacks, that does sound helpful. Hopefully I can remember that combination.
It's kind of hard to get used to. I keep going back and forth between this computer and my other ones and getting the scrolling direction and keyboard shortcuts wrong. Also a 21.5" monitor to 9" one is a huge difference. o_o

Re: New Computer
I guess one thing to be happy about is that your security might be a bit better. In simple terms, Windows systems came from a very basic operating system and was used as a base to build the operating system we have today. So now Windows has all of these built-in backdoors that you have to be careful about or an attacker can use them. Well, then again Microsoft has added a LOT of security measures to the system since then and it may be even more secure than a few Linux distributions. I'm not sure about an OSX machine though; I'm in programming and so we don't use OSX for anything. Apple programming is completely different and is a completely new language (source: my friend's older brother who is in university for Apple programming).

Graduated CS major here and been working in the field for one year, same is true for Stormy. I'm not clear on what you mean by Apple programming, much less it being completely different. I have done programming in various Windows OSs, Mac OSX, and Ubuntu, and the only differences between them were how to run my software. Everything else is based around the language, not the operating system.

Re: New Computer
You can program in any language on a Mac that you can on a PC. It's not different.
Also, I'm fairly certain Macs are only more secure because historically they aren't as widely used as PCs. Now that they're getting to be more mainstream, more people are writing malware for them, so they are becoming less secure. Our school only set up antiviruses on their Macs after a few of them got a virus that was going around.
Why a mac. Whyyyyyyyy. Shiny pieces of glass that shatter at the slightest thing.
But they're so shinyyyyyyyy! D:
I was anti-Mac too until I realized it was just dumb brand loyalty and that both Macs and PCs have their positives and negatives. The only really bad thing is that they're so dang expensive, but it can be worth it because they (so I've heard) last longer and look really nice (and they are shiny).

That's the main reason why I stated my friend as being the source for my knowledge. He talks about how he basically had to learn his programming from scratch because it is completely different in some way. I don't get it, I don't get what makes it that much different, and that is mainly because I've never owned any of Apple's PCs nor used them enough to learn them.
In the end it's just personal preference ... or how much money you want to fork out for a name with a shiny face. I will admit though, my 3rd Gen iPod Nano has a metal casing and it has taken one heck of a beating throughout all these years I've had it.

Re: New Computer
I've heard so many complaints about iPhones breaking, but those old iPods always seemed pretty sturdy to me.
It sounds like Apple has a pretty good warranty/replacement program, as well.

I personally prefer Windows, but Stormy's new computer is really cool and fun to play around with, I'll say that much.

Re: New Computer
When/If my iPod ever dies I'll just shoot it up with my .22 LR rifle and see if the bullets make a hole. I am voting that they will only make dents.
Now if I shoot it with my 7.62x54r ... of course it's going to have a bad day.
