Microsoft tells us to shove it, and says xbox 3 will require always on DRM

In the wake of new purported details about the next Xbox's always-online requirement, Microsoft Studios' creative director has spoken out on Twitter about negative reactions to the prospect.

Adam Orth's tweets are now protected, but a poster on NeoGAF saved them for prosperity:
jF1Mjq5MZmVHd.png
Orth also got into a minor spat with BioWare employee Manheer Heir. "Sorry, I don't get the drama around having an 'always-on' console," he said. "Every device is now 'always-on'. #dealwithit"

dealwithit.jpg

Orth has been with Microsoft for just over a year, working on an unannounced project (which can be safely assumed to be a Nextbox title). Previously he has been Creative Lead/Creative Director at LucasArts and a Senior Designer at PopCap.

So guys, me and several others are doing a spread to make it viral. Use hashtag #dontbuyxbox on twitter.
Looks like i will never buy an ms product again.

Not everyone at MS is a jack-*bleep*. He might be, but not everyone.

Why is there a new Xbox thread when there's one here?

Swaffy, it's fine because this is a different topic than just the new Xbox in general. Remember, please use the report button for these kinds of things instead of posting about it in the thread itself so as not to take the thread off topic.

What everyone's complaining about is that you'll need to have an internet connection at all times to play games.

It's really simple, and he just misses the point. Is electricity necessary for a vacuum cleaner to work? Yes. Is mobile service necessary for a cell phone to work? Yes. Obviously if you didn't have either of those services you wouldn't buy one of those things. But is an internet connection necessary for an offline game to work? No, at least not until this crap.

The point is that you shouldn't have to need internet all the time, and that's a problem because not everyone has the option of having a connection all the time. There's just no point to it except for Microsoft's own purposes, and it's really just an inconvenience to the players who just want to play their *bleep*ing games without interruption.

Also, this guy is acting totally immature about the whole thing. Creating a strawman to represent everyone who doesn't like the idea is not going to make them agree with you, dude.

I like simcity 5.

Vote with your wallet. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If they see that, they will change.

Yes, my electronic devices are always connected to the internet. That's not really a problem. However, you better make *bleep* sure your wireless technology is great, Microsoft. Not every has ethernet cables running to and fro in their homes. Also, always online also means YOUR network god *bleep* better be always online to. If the rumors of this "checking the disc online" stuff turns out to be true, if there is even a single hitch in the system, you can bet your *bleep* that the internet and consumer base will be in an uproar on a scale far greater than what happened with SimCity.

Not only that, it screws over rural gamers who do not have good choices of ISP's. When I was growing up I had several friends with Xbox's and Xbox 360s (depending on what year we're talking about) but not Xbox Live because a) it would be pointless with the *bleep*y connection speeds that were available in my home community and b) the cost of XBL. I had Xbox Live but every day I used it was a gamble of whether I'd even be able to play without lagging out of any game I join.

What I don't get is why Microsoft isn't listening to the complaints. It's obvious everyone hates the idea....

Do they think people love them so much that anything they put out will sell no matter what, or are they just too stupid to think about the possibility of losing money until it's actually happening?

Keep in mind Microsoft themselves are saying none of this. It's an individual person on his personal Twitter, Microsoft employee may he be.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/5/418831 … ation-xbox

That said the company themselves aren't doing anything better to reassure us about the issue, just apologizing for Orth's rudeness

Oddly they never seem to listen to the fans...

Re: Microsoft tells us to shove it, and says xbox 3 will require always on DRM

think about every change that's been made to YouTube in the past 5 years (and all of the resulting videos and anger and belligerent comments and BOYCOTTS and people LEAVING THE SITE that ensued), or the introduction of Timeline on Facebook that everyone hated. i'm not surprised at all that Microsoft aren't listening to the complaints, this seems to be a growing trend.

with any luck, the next thing they release WILL be always-online, and then everybody here gets together and NOT buys one, showing the world corporations that acting like this does not work and *gasp* tends to *bleep* off most of your user base.

Re: Microsoft tells us to shove it, and says xbox 3 will require always on DRM

I doubt any threats of "boycotting" have had any significant effect on those sites. Youtube is still huge, so of course they're not going to take stuff like that seriously. Same thing for Facebook (although Facebook kind of does seem to be in trouble right now, but for different reasons).

So yeah, now that I think about it, people complain a lot, and they'll threaten to leave and boycott and whatever else, but their complaints aren't always followed by action. They're just trying to cause a scene hoping it will get them their way. I'll bet that's what's going to happen here with Microsoft.

Re: Microsoft tells us to shove it, and says xbox 3 will require always on DRM

Just remember to all you pro always online people:

1. If your internet goes down, or their servers go into maintenance mode, you are NOT playing your new system.
2. If you dont have internet, your not playing your system.

Just remember that.
Wii u and PS4 dont have always online, so basically this is gonna kill it. Ive got several friends on XBL who told me they are switching to PS4 next gen if it requires internet.
Xbox 720 will be the final console from microsoft if this happens. It will be just like sega and the dreamcast problem back in 2001.

Swaffy, the reason that "post is too short" thing exists is to prevent posts like that that don't contribute anything, so please don't evade it. Thanks.

So since everyone here seems to be against this, has anyone actually encountered someone who is for it? Besides Microsoft employees, obviously. tongue

I don't care if a console is always connected. I've gotten used to requiring internet for everything.

That's a good point, if my desktop doesn't have Internet connection I try to
get it up and running whether or not it's needed, even if it means restarting
the router and waiting for it to come back on.
