Re: Adult beverages?

I dunno, I'm not asking you to understand. I don't get it either, but I also don't really care. The only reason I'm even posting in the first place is to encourage you guys to get off the high horses a little.

I honestly don't drink much alcohol, but when I have it's usually beer or wine, never Vodka though, nasty stuff.

Hard liquor like vodka isn't meant to be drunk straight. Some pretty tasty cocktails can be made with it as an ingredient though.

At what point did I imply that? Sounds like you have some negative thoughts about alcohol that your pinning on me...

Also Stormy I never said I wanted any of you to stop drinking. Just because I think it's stupid doesn't mean I'm going to try and convince you to stop.

Can you imagine how much safer the world would be without it though?

Re: Adult beverages?

Yeah, I know that wasn't your intention. The thing that annoyed me was that you seemed to be acting rather "superior" about it, I guess.

And yeah, the world would be safer without a lot of things, but I like to believe that people should be able to make their own choices about whether or not it's right for themselves. Freedom and safety are both important things; there has to be a balance somewhere.

Re: Adult beverages?

i'm also bothered that a lot of alcohol is made by corporations that feed off of people who are addicted to it while advertising to younger audiences. it's just like cigarettes.

Re: Adult beverages?

Just curious, what alcohol companies do that? I think it's actually illegal to advertise it to minors, for one thing, like cigarettes. I'd actually be really surprised if it isn't, considering there was just a law passed banning food companies from targeting kids.

How do they "feed off people who are addicted"? I'm pretty sure they don't have some kind of evil agenda going like "we're going to target our advertisements towards alcoholics today!"

as for not advertising, please, there are still some beer ads on TV that kids could easily watch. i've seen these, and hardly ever watch TV. if it just passed, they might have pulled them for all i know.

@ Clock-la - i'm okay with that. are you?

Re: Adult beverages?

Okay, first thing: your condescension is not appreciated. Your little "..." and question mark where you try to make it look like I'm an idiot for not knowing such an obvious thing? Please try a better debate tactic.

How exactly are companies supposed to keep people who are addicted from purchasing their product? That's kind of impossible. Sure, they could just stop selling it altogether, but here's where it looks like we're never going to agree: I'm a strong believer in personal responsibility in things like this. No one's being forced to buy the alcohol. If it's doing bad things for you, it's your responsibility to stop buying it, not the company's responsibility to stop selling it, not everyone else's responsibility to stop drinking it for you. For most people, it is not a harmful product; it's misuse that makes it that way.

As for commercials, ehem, puhhh-leaaease, what does it matter if a kid happens to see a beer commercial? What kid is going to see a bunch of 40 year old dudes drinking beer and watching football on a couch thinking "Wow, they're so cool, I wanna be just like them! Better go drink some beer now!" Advertisements aren't going to be very effective on markets they aren't intended for. I'd take this a lot more seriously if you could find me a commercial where they're actually intending to go after kids. Please don't try to act like you're some kind of expert on businesses' "agendas" when you apparently don't even understand how marketing works....

Re: Adult beverages?

^ Pretty much. If you object to companies being profit-driven there's really not much you should be able to purchase in good conscience. Including, you know, your computer... your internet service....

By the way, apparently it is illegal in the US to show alcohol actually being consumed in commercials. Just a fun fact.

i was waiting for this. i didn't get any of this. my family bought and pays for these. i just also use it for various things. and now that i have friends on here who live too far away to actually visit, i suppose i'm sort of stuck on it. but believe me, that underlying feeling is always there. not supporting big corporations is a very important thing to me. the current system is ruining Earth, whether people see it or not. yet i hardly have to try, though. they never sell anything worth buying, alcohol included. just gadgets to waste time like cable TV or phones with barcode-scanning apps, or some kind of unhealthy food i don't need.

the fact that most societal things are corrupt doesn't make it okay. life is better without it, even just on a personal level.

Re: Adult beverages?

So are you actually saying that when you go off on your own, you won't have a computer and internet access? Or anything you have to buy from a large corporation? If that's what you're going to do, then great... but I find that very hard to believe. And couldn't you also say that, even though your parents are paying for them right now, you're supporting the use of them by using them yourself?

Really, I have no problem if this is your worldview. That's great. But I can't take it seriously at all if you're not going to actually live by it. It's all talk.

I wouldn't go so far as to automatically equate "large corporation" and "profit-driven" with "corruption" either. Not everything that's for profit is necessarily bad.

Re: Adult beverages?

I find it ironic that 36IStillLikeSpyro36 is so much against the "big corporations", but yet... who owns them? The general public! the people who have investments in them for retirement. Your parents. Your friends. Your teachers. You don't hurt a "corporation" by not using their products, you hurt Mr and Mrs Smith down the street who have a retirement portfolio just like millions upon millions of other normal regular every day hard working people.
