Re: Portal 2

Portal 1 frustrated me. A lot. I played for a couple hours before throwing the controller at the wall in rage. Let's just say that repeatedly trying to jump from fifty feet up into a tiny hole that you have to create while falling in first person is not what I call fun. Why is there no third person option!? Argh!

So yeah. Probably won't be buying Portal 2. <.<

Trust me on this, 3rd person would make harder, because your character model would obscure your line of sight. It's all about timing and precision.

I feel like this is similar to why I never liked the Tomb Raider games.

Get it on PC, keyboard and mouse > controller

How did you get that I can't "think with portals" out of that? I just don't like controlling the character. I got sick of repeating every action again and again and again and dying again and again and again because I'm bad at jumping in first person.

And Apoc, I'm pretty sure a mouse and a keyboard wouldn't help with that seeing as the only PC games I've ever played are Rollercoaster Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon.

Play Amnesia, you can get used to the mouse and keyboard then. Jumping in first person, for me, is a little easier than in third person because my line of sight isn't obscured by the character model. I think there might be a mod for 3rd person.

Re: Portal 2

Suicide dives and high-fives, hurrah!

I've got a birthday in just over a week, so I'll get it then. I'll play the co-op with a couple of friends. Naturally, I shall be the masculine-bot. I didn't play the first one, but I've heard a lot about it, and a trans-dimensional, physics-bending puzzle shooter with manipulative and sadistic enemies sounds right down my street.

You don't get to choose which bot you play as. It randomly assigns you to one each game...

FPS games were designed to play on a PC. Any experienced gamer will tell you that it is 10x easier to aim and shoot on a computer than with a joystick/gamepad. Even the most mediocre PC gamer will be able to beat a console gamer when it comes to FPS games, no matter what experience they have.

I don't see why it's difficult since the game puts you into the portal FOR you. If you jump 50 feet off a cliff into a small portal, if you are 5 feet off the game will push you closer to the portal.

The reason I said you weren't 'thinking with portals' was because:

1. It's a joke. The motto of GLaDOS in the first game was "Now you are thinking with Portals."
2. No one in their right mind would shoot a portal and THEN jump into it. You need to jump and then you will know where you will land. When that happens THEN you shoot the portal below you.
3. You are implying that you kept dying because you missed your portal. I don't understand how this is, because you can be going over 9000 kph and smash into the ground. No death occurs.

I have never played an FPS on the PC nor have I particularly cared to. I did not know this.

And I guess I must have been more than five feet away, because I did keep missing it. And yeah, I did try shooting while falling. Still didn't work.

1. I probably didn't get that far, or maybe I don't remember.
2. As I said, I tried that. That was the situation I tried to describe in the first post.
3. I was not implying that. I died in situations other than the first example I described.

The point was the game frustrated me, so I didn't like it. No need to turn it into an argument about how mediocre of a gamer I am. I already know I suck at FPSes. tongue

Re: Portal 2

The only reason I know that Portal 2 is out is this:

Notch, the creator of Minecraft, is taking a small number of days off from
updating Minecraft to play Portal 2.

I wasn't turning it into an argument. I was just explaining my reasoning for saying that. I've never actually seen you play, so I don't think it would be wise for me to say you aren't good at games. I was just trying to explain how it would be easier for you to use a computer due to you not liking the controls of FPS games on consoles.

I never even heard of Minecraft until I heard Garry take a few days off updating GMod to help the Minecraft creator update his game.

Yes, the game began as just a small building type of game, and now it is
very polished with all sorts of random stuff in it. You can create hundreds
of different things including your own songs [using Note Blocks] and in-
game calculators that actually work.

Eh, your post just came of as a little PC-gamer-snob-ish to me, so I interpreted it as an attempt to argue. My mistake, I guess.

I never actually said anything about not liking the controls of FPS games on consoles or even anything at all about FPS games in general; everything I've said up to this point has been about Portal only. I've played other FPS games on consoles with little difficulty.

Overpriced to my taste. And I refuse to pirate games, especially if it was a small indie developer who created it. I like the concept of the game though, using blocks to create the world instead of meshes and objects. I just prefer GMod because you can do more and it's integrated into Steam. I'm going to see if I can integrate the Portal gun into GMod somehow XD.

The reason I said "Even the most mediocre PC gamer will be able to beat a console gamer when it comes to FPS games" is because it's been tried and proven before that when it comes to a mouse vs. a joystick in the same game, the ones with the mice would win due to mice moving at an exponential rate rather than a relative rate. Many FPS games are actually leveled down on consoles due to that. For example, the Battlefield and Call of Duty series actually enable target tracking, so your joystick moves slower and somewhat follows the enemy when you get an aim on them. But when a game isn't "leveled down" to that kind of level (such as Portal), then it becomes a lot more difficult for someone to play it. Especially when it's a game that requires fast reflexes.

You can get the Portal gun in Minecraft.  (not to mention there are Spyro-esque portals to a hellish world in the un-modded game)

I meant a GOOD portal mod XD. And besides, it's sort of difficult to incorporate the portal gun into a game without any physics =P

Re: Portal 2

I might be a little late to the party here, but wow. I just finished the single-player game, and the ending blew my mind. Pure lunacy.

My only problem was that it was a little too easy at times. I wanted more split-second reaction shots. But I suppose it must be quite hard, because my younger brother has retired from the game, complaining that he had to "think too much."
