About SpyroChat: FAQ, Rules, and User Directory

FAQ
What is SpyroChat?
Not to be confused with SpyroForum's built-in one-on-one chat, Spyrochat is one channel onour IRC network, Alucica (website hopefuly coming soon). In IRC, you can talk to many users at once. You can connect to our channel by using an IRC client such as Mibbit.com, mIRC, Chatzilla, and a number of other different programs you can download. This link will take you straight to the #spyrochat channel if you have an IRC client installed. Or you can just use SpyroChat.com, where you can sign in with your SpyroForum username and password.
For more information about IRC, read this. You can also PM me, Stormy, if you have any questions about how IRC or SpyroChat works.
What's the easiest way to get to Spyrochat?
Use the web chat on the Alucica website! Just go here, click on #spyrochat, enter your name, and you're in! If you want to configure the web chat to your liking, click the little "menu" button in the top left corner and select whatever options you want.
What's Mibbit and how do you use it?
Mibbit is another web IRC client that Spyrochat.com used to use. A lot of people still use it now. To use it:
1. Go to this page.
2. In the "Connect" box, click "Server."
3. Type in "irc.aluci.ca" for the server
3. Enter your name in the "Nick" box.
4. Enter "#spyrochat" in the "Channel" box.
5. Press "Go."
6. You're done!
Who is everyone?
A lot of people have decided to use different names on Spyrochat than on the forums. This can get confusing, so here's a list of Spyrochat names and the forum names they correspond to.
Brad - Spyrorocks
Droid - KingLambda
Slabity - Neotyguy40 (aka Everto)
The-Dark-Master - JRK75
If a name you don't recognize isn't on this list, it's probably either because that person doesn't post on the forum often enough, if at all.
Why do some users have those images/symbols next to their names?
Those are user modes. They indicate a user's rank in the channel. The user modes we use are v, o, a, and q.
Voice (+v)
ChanServ (basically a bot) automatically gives voice to everyone who joins the channel. +v allows you to send messages to the chat that everyone can see. If you have your voice taken away, you may no longer send messages. On Mibbit and SpyroChat.com, this mode shows up as a grey megaphone.
Op (+o)
Ops are the basic staff of the channel. They can kick users from the channel, ban and unban, give and take away voice, set the topic, and other do moderator-y tasks.
Admins or Protected Ops (+ao)
They're basically just like ops, only they can't be kicked by other ops.
Founders (+qao)
Founder is the highest rank. Channel founders have the house, key, and star next to their names on Mibbit and Spyrochat.com. Kimori and Brad (Spyrorocks) are founders on Spyrochat.
If you ever need help, just ask someone with a star. Except for ChanServ. ChanServ can't help you because it is a bot. And a servant of Jackie Chan.
Can I register my name so only I can use it?
Yes, and it's a good idea to do so if you don't want to be impersonated. To register your name, use the following command:
/msg nickserv register password emailWith password being your desired password and email being your email address. After using this command once, you'll be asked to identify yourself when you enter the server. To do so, enter this:
/msg nickserv identify passwordOr the shorthand:
/ns id passwordIf anyone else is using your registered name, they will have to choose another name or have a new name forced on them.
I was kicked! How do I get back in?
/join #spyrochatHow do I use actions?
Type the following command and press enter and you will perform an "action" on the channel.
/me knows how to use channel actions! How do I change my name while on the channel?
/nick NewNickHerePlease don't use this too often, though, or it'll start to get confusing with who's who. Also, please log in with your forum username so we know who you are. If you want to start using a different name, let one of the ops know so we can avoid any confusion.
Can I talk to someone privately?
If you type this:
/msg PMTarget I'm sending you a PM!you will send the user called PMTarget a private message. Please note that the person you are trying to PM must be online to receive the message, and messages are not stored for later if they are not online.
What should I do about this person who is annoying me?
If they don't stop after you ask them, you can ignore them. Typing this:
/ignore AnnoyingPersonwill make it so you won't see any of AnnoyingPerson's messages. To undo this type:
/unignore AnnoyingPersonPlease do not complain incessantly about annoying behavior or you may become annoying yourself! If someone is harassing you, though, alert one of the ops and we will deal with it.
Are the rules the same as on SpyroForum?
We're a little less strict, and there is no word censor, but don't go overboard with cursing or inappropriate topics or you may be kicked. If you absolutely have to link to something that's not safe for work, let people know before they click on it.

Things you should do:
Suggestions and loosely enforced "rules"
Say hi when you join!
If you don't say anything, other members might not even notice you're there. Most of us aren't alerted every time someone joins, but we are alerted when a message is sent - if you want us to talk to you, say something when you join!
Be respectful.
Insulting other users and other belligerent behavior is not allowed on Spyrochat. This is self-explanatory.
Don't be annoying.
"Annoying" includes flooding the chat with messages, spamming, consistent ALL CAPITALS, trying to change the current subject, too many smilies, chatspeak, and other things.
How to not be annoying - Part I: Try to go with the flow of conversation.
This is more of a suggestion than a rule, but we have other interests besides Spyro. We actually don't really talk about Spyro that often. This actually goes for any topic: don't be too insistent about sticking to a single subject or trying to change the current one, or you may annoy people.
How to not be annoying - Part II: Avoid chatspeak/textspeak.
Please try to use somewhat proper English sentences. It doesn't have to be perfect, but we don't want chatspeak, either.
"But y cant we tlk howevr we want 2?!" you might ask inarticulately. Well, you can, but people might find it hard to understand you, and it might be annoying to some people.
How to not be annoying - Part III: Don't use obnoxious text colors.
Like this. Or this. Or this. You get the idea.
How to not be annoying - Part IV: Don't tell us things we don't want to know.
In the wise words of mujaffa, "Some things should stay between you and your internet provider." For example, if you are attracted to dragons, please do not tell us about it. Seriously.
Don't be offended if no one responds to you right away.
Some members leave their computers connected to Spyrochat even when they are not physically at them, and sometimes people are busy doing things on their computers besides looking at their Spyrochat window. Not getting an immediate reply doesn't mean you're being ignored. If you join during one of the more inactive times, please do not try to make Spyrochat your only source of entertainment or you may be disappointed.
Use your own forum name or one that we will recognize as you.
Otherwise, how will we know who you are? If you want to be known as something other than your forum name, please tell people about it to avoid confusion. Also, don't impersonate other people or pretend to be someone new; we will know it's you.
If there's something you don't get, feel free to ask!
You can PM me on the forum or on SpyroChat, or you can just ask anyone in the channel. ![]()
