A Twist of Fate
Partially inspired by this pic:
(Yes I know Apoc did a story inspired by this, but mine is slightly different, with my own characters.)
I have rated this story 15+ due to some images that may disturb more sensitive people. Read with caution.
Well, I hope you like it. ![]()
----------------------
There was little atmosphere within the silent air. The four dragons could only hear the sound of their own footprints upon the dirt. One of them was easily recognised by his purple scales, and went by the name of Spyro. A black dragoness was walking beside him, keeping close to her friend and swiftly moving her head to the slightest sounds.
Two older dragons walked behind them. One was a male, with dark blue scales, bright red eyes and a dark green chest, horns and wings. The other dragoness was snow white, with ocean blue eyes and azure wings, chest and horns.
They were walking through a barren wasteland. The ground was black, and burnt. Black tree stumps scattered the landscape, and the stench of smoke and death filled the dragons' nostrils.
The white dragoness looked at the blue dragon beside her. "Nemo, what does Ulkna want us for?"
Spyro turned his head. "He said he wants to call a truce." He answered for Nemo.
The black dragoness looked at Spyro. "But... how do we know we can trust him?"
"We don't Cynder." Spyro replied. "But we have to take a chance. If it means the end of this... death and destruction, then I'm all for it."
"Well, we're here to back you you up, Spyro." The white dragoness said. "We're all friends, and so we'll help you until the end."
"I'm sure you will." Spyro smiled at the two dragons behind him. "Thanks, Ophelia."
"I think this is the place." Nemo said, stopping.
"But it looks the same." Cynder said.
"No, this is the place." Spyro stopped too. "I feel him."
"Me too." Nemo said, growling slightly. "I could never forget the feeling of his presence."
The four dragons stood for some time. Vultures perched on the branches of the dead trees and eyed them hungrily.
Ophelia noticed. "This place is so scary." She whispered as Nemo draped his wing over her comfortingly.
"Spyro, this can't be the place." Cynder said, "Let's move on."
"It is." Spyro replied. He was certain. This was the place. "But... Let me warn you all. Ulkna has unfathomable powers - he's no pushover. My biggest warning is.. If you feel a tingling sensation in ANY part of your body, get out of Ulkna's line of sight immediately.
"Why?" Asked Ophelia.
"You don't want to know." Spyro said, shivering.
"Spyro means it." Nemo warned. "I've seen Ulkna in action too. He's a merciless killer."
"Lovely." said Cynder.
Suddenly, the wind picked up. A huge black dragon appeared out of nowhere in front of them. His wings, chest and underbelly were a deep blood - red colour, with curved, ivory horns. A huge scar covered his right eye. The eye itself was grey and blind. His other eye was a glowing, emerald green.
"Ulkna." Spyro growled, taking small steps towards the dark dragon. Ophelia stepped back slightly, and Nemo stood in front of her defensively. Cynder stepped back too, but made sure she stayed close to Spyro.
"Be careful." She whispered.
"Alright then Ulkna." Spyro said, trying to hide his fear. "What do you propose?"
Ulkna just chuckled and shook his head. "You fools. You've just walked straight into my trap."
Spyro's eyes grew wide. Ophelia moaned and stepped back more. Nemo gasped, and Cynder let out a small squeal.
"I KNEW IT!" Spyro shouted. "You tricked us."
"I see you've brought friends." Ulkna grinned, looking at Nemo and Ophelia. "Hello Nemo."
"You b******." Growled Nemo.
"Nice to see you too." Ulkna said, "Now, let's get this over with shall we?"
Spyro roared in fury and burst into a sprint around Ulkna. The dark dragon howled in rage and leaped forward, slashing his claws swiftly. Spyro rolled out of the way and unleashed a blast of fire. He stopped and gasped as the fire simply bounced off Ulkna before it'd even reached him. Of course... The shield...
Meanwhile Cynder decided to try and distract Ulkna. "You *bleep* sadist." She growled, her fangs dripping with poison. She gave Spyro a small nod before leaping at Ulkna. Landing on his back, she sunk her teeth into his hide. The black beast groaned and thrashed, trying to knock her off his back. Then, he abruptly stopped, and turned his head so that his good eye - his left one - was staring at her. It started to glow fiercely. Cynder gasped as she was held in mid-air. "Please, put me down!" She screamed, squirming around, desperately trying to break free of Ulkna's psychic grasp. She suddenly felt herself being tossed downwards, and cried out in agony as she hit the floor.
"Leave her alone!" Ophelia screamed, pushing Nemo out of the way and lunging forward. She shot small, sharp Ice shards at Ulkna's feet. The dark dragon jumped up and hovered in the air, avoiding them altogether.
"You stupid girl..." He shook his head and laughed coldly.
Ophelia suddenly stopped. Her head felt as if someone with huge hands had grasped it and was squeezing it as hard as they could. She collapsed on her side and clutched it, groaning loudly. She remembered what Nemo had told her... And she knew what was coming.
Suddenly, it came. The worst pain imaginable. She screamed in pure agony as she fitted uncontrollably. Ulkna merely stood and watched her, smiling maniacally.
"No... Not torture..." Nemo gasped, remembering his own experience. "NO! NOT OPHELIA! LEAVE HER ALONE!" He bellowed, charging at Ulkna and unleashing a stream of black Shadow fire. Again, he was in too late, and Ulkna had managed to summon his invisible shield. Nemo felt sick as the Shadow fire simply bounced off and hit the floor.
"You surrendered to me last time, Nemo." Ulkna growled, "It can happen again."
"You... You're the one who made me like this... Like a monster!"
"And how do you know?"
"Because no one else is cruel and sadist enough to turn an innocent child, like I was, into a murderer against his own will."
Ulkna shrugged. "Maybe it was for the best. After all, you'd make a good minion." He said, laughing coldly.
"I'D RATHER DIE!" Nemo screamed, lifting his paw and aiming to strike Ulkna's chest. In return, he got a powerful blow to the face, and a nice, bloody gash across his cheek. He flew backwards and landed roughly on the floor.
Spyro rushed to Cynder's side. "Are you OK?!"
Cynder sat up slowly, the back of her head bleeding. "I-I think so."
The two of them were dwarfed by Ulkna. He was huge, at least twice the size of Ophelia and Nemo, who were adults. "Now then..." Ulkna sneered, "Who shall die first?"
"Not Cynder!" Spyro snapped, covering the terrified dragoness with his wing. "Leave her alone! She's got nothing to do with this! It's me you want." He glanced at the near-unconscious Nemo and the convulsing and screaming Ophelia. "Please... Spare them."
"Why should I?" Ulkna's eyes grew wide and psychotic as Cynder started to cry. "WHY CRY?! You act as if crying will solve all your problems! Well, let me tell you this - crying doesn't get you anywhere! PEOPLE HEAR YOU, BUT NEVER HELP YOU!" Small stones rose up off the floor and floated all around Ulkna before flying towards Cynder. "IT MAKES ME SICK! YOU ALL THINK THAT BY CRYING SOMEONE WILL COME AND HELP YOU! DO YOU THINK THAT THE PERSON WHO COMES TO HELP YOU WILL TAKE ALL YOUR PAIN UPON THEMSELVES?! DO YOU EVEN REALISE HOW UNTHINKABLE THAT IS?!"
"SHUT UP!" Spyro screamed back, "Who are you to say things like that to Cynder? She's crying because of you! What you've done to this kingdom! THAT'S unthinkable! And d@mn unforgivable!"
"I'LL RULE THIS KINGDOM HOW I WANT!" Ulkna screamed, batting Cynder aside with his paw and lunging for Spyro.
Nemo groaned as his cheek throbbed and he started to come round. The sound of heavy liquid hitting the floor and cries of pain and anguish. Then he heard it. A chilling, blood-curdling scream of pure agony. Nemo's eyes shot open. Spyro was lying on the ground with his back to him, under a massive pool of crimson liquid. Cynder was crawling to him, calling his name and crying.
"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!" Nemo screamed, jumping to his feet, ignoring the pain, and lunging at Ulkna. He realised Fear shockwaves in the dark dragon's direction. Nemo cried out as his head flared up in pain and he collapsed on the floor.
"Nemo... When will you learn?" Ulkna said, shaking his head. "You are a weakling. A pathetic, little weakling..."
"No... I..." Nemo's eyes were heavy, as if he was going to pass out again. "I'll kill you... I will..."
"I have better things to do. And, looking at the state of Spyro, I reckon my job here is done." Ulkna outstretched his huge wings and disappeared into the blackness of the night.
The pain in Ophelia's head finally ceased. She gasped and smiled weakly in relief. She had never felt anything like it in her life. "N-Nemo?" She called tearfully.
Using the last of his strength, Nemo got to his feet and dragged himself over to her. "It's OK, Ophelia. I'm here. Ulkna's gone now. You're OK."
"Well, I am now." Ophelia said weakly as Nemo helped her to her feet. She looked around, then stopped and gasped. "Oh my god... SPYRO!" She screamed, limping forward. Nemo followed her, and retched in horror by what he saw.
Spyro's left forelimb had been savagely ripped off. Not sliced. Not cut. Ripped. Part of the bone was sticking out of the stump, and his breathing came in short gasps. Cynder practically lay on top of him, calling his name, and getting no response. A huge pool of blood formed underneath him.
"Oh no... No..." Nemo gasped, pacing back and forth.
"Spyro? Can you hear us?" Ophelia called desperately. "It's OK, we're all here. You'll be OK." She rambled.
"I'll go and get help!" Nemo said, taking off.
Spyro suddenly coughed and slowly opened his eyes and looked at Cynder.
"Spyro? Oh! You'll be OK, don't worry. Nemo's gone to get help." Cynder said, trying to hide her tears.
Spyro laughed weakly. "The tingling... I failed to follow my own advice..."
"Don't worry about that! Ulkna's gone now. You'll be fine!" Ophelia said, gazing in horror at the massive pool of blood forming underneath Spyro. People can survive these things... Yeah... She told herself, As long as... They don't lose too much blood... She felt very sick and turned around. "Come on Nemo!" She urged.
Spyro suddenly retched and coughed up blood. Gasping and sobbing, he looked up at Cynder. "I'm... I'm scared Cynder. It hurts... It hurts SO MUCH!" He cried, as he struggled to keep his eyes open.
"Stay awake Spyro!" Ophelia demanded. "Hang on!"
"I... I can't... I'm so tired..." Spyro whispered as his eyes slowly closed.
"Spyro! Don't close your eyes! You MUST stay awake!" Ophelia shouted, starting to cry.
Cynder sobbed hysterically. "SPYRO! NO! PLEASE! PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME! DON'T LEAVE ME ALONE! SPYROOOOO!"
Ophelia stared at Spyro in disbelief. His chest was motionless. "No... No please, no. This hasn't happened..."
Seconds later, Nemo landed nearby, and a young adult human girl with long black hair and wearing slave's rags slid off his back. "Here's Lucy." Nemo huffed, trying to catch his breath. "She always knows what to do, right?"
Ophelia turned slowly to face Nemo, tears staining her face. "Too late..." She whispered.
Lucy stopped running and collapsed on her knees. "You're... You're kidding right?" She crawled over to Spyro and felt his neck. She let out a small cry, and turned to face Nemo and Ophelia. She shook her head solemnly.
Cynder lay on top of Spyro and howled. Nemo swallowed repeatedly, trying not to throw up. "I'll... Kill... I'll kill him..." He gasped.
Ophelia started to sob and Nemo draped his wing over her. Lucy hugged Nemo's chest and cried herself.
Nemo, fighting back tears, looked up at the stars and whispered, "Spyro? I know you're up there. I promise... I shall avenge you."

Re: A Twist of Fate
Err... now you mention it I MAY do another chapter, but it's unlikely. Read my fanfic if you like this. It's in a lot more detail.

Re: A Twist of Fate
Pfft... It's always so difficult to judge single chapter stories, because I can't really judge the storyline. Let's think analytically. Firstly, the battle scene is worth half of this, so it should be pretty good, right? Except it wasn't. It was just your four getting the *bleep* kicked out of them. Your guys just jumped and then this Ulkna fellow ignored any attacks. No tension, you know? So not very good at all. I would have loved a paragraph or two with a simaltaneous attack with some properly good moves coming out of Ulkna, instead of just grab 'n' shake.
Characters, well, I liked how you did Cynder at the beginning, but not so much at the end. Maybe I'm asking too much in that department though. Spyro was fine. Ulkna was boring. As a few friends of mine would put it, "He was just some hench guy". Ophelia and Nemo hadn't enough screen time for me to need them to have any real personalities, or build an idea of what they were.
On the plus side, you can write the skin of a story, the description, the scenery, etc. You just need to fill it up with a few nice ideas, and nicer characters.
5/10, maybe 6/10.
It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It's called living.

Re: A Twist of Fate
OK, thanks Ace. It was just a little short story that was inspired by the picture. But I will admit that I rushed it a little, especially towards the end. I might re-write it actually.
