Disney and Pixar's Slate Until 2012 Announced!

I love Disney and Pixar and a few days ago they revealed all their plans for animated films until the year 2012! They probably have more in production but didn't want to reveal anything further than what's coming out in the next four years. This is the first time in several decades Disney openly announced a slate of upcoming films so many years in advance. In the past, they announced a film about a year ahead of time but no more. This time they announced films four years out - which is a rare event. Here are the films they'll be making with descriptions:

Pixar’s release schedule is as follows:

Jun 27, 2008 – WALL•E

After hundreds of lonely years doing what he was built for, WALL•E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) discovers a new purpose in life (besides collecting knick-knacks) when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE. EVE comes to realize that WALL*E has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planet's future, and races back to space to report her findings to the humans (who have been eagerly awaiting word that it is safe to return home). Meanwhile, WALL•E chases EVE across the galaxy and sets into motion one of the most incredible comedy adventures ever brought to the big screen.

May 29, 2009 – Up

From the Academy Award®-nominated team of director Pete Docter ("Monsters, Inc.") and co-director Bob Peterson comes "Up," a comedic adventure taking off (and lifting spirits) in summer 2009. Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. "Up" takes audiences on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounter wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures. When seeking adventure next summer -- look "Up."

Jun 18, 2010 – Toy Story 3

The creators of the beloved "Toy Story" films re-open the toy box and bring moviegoers back to the delightful world of Woody, Buzz and our favorite gang of toy characters in "Toy Story 3." Lee Unkrich (co-director of "Toy Story 2" and "Finding Nemo") directs this highly anticipated film, and Michael Arndt, the Academy Award®-winning screenwriter of "Little Miss Sunshine," brings his unique talents and comedic sensibilities to the proceedings.

Summer 2011 – newt

What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can't stand each other? That's the problem facing Newt and Brooke, heroes of "newt," the Pixar film by seven-time Academy Award® winner for sound Gary Rydstrom, and director of Pixar's Oscar-nominated short, "Lifted." Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science.

Christmas 2011, The Bear and the Bow

A rugged and mythic Scotland is the setting for Pixar's action-adventure "The Bear and the Bow." The impetuous, tangle-haired Merida, though a daughter of royalty, would prefer to make her mark as a great archer. A clash of wills with her mother compels Merida to make a reckless choice, which unleashes unintended peril on her father's kingdom and her mother's life. Merida struggles with the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and a dark, ancient curse to set things right. Director Brenda Chapman ("The Prince of Egypt," "The Lion King") and the storytelling wizards of Pixar conjure humor, fantasy and excitement in this rich Highland tale.

Summer 2012 – Cars 2

All the world's a racetrack as racing superstar Lightning McQueen zooms back into action, with his best friend Mater in tow, to take on the globe's fastest and finest in this thrilling high-octane new installment of the "Cars" saga. Mater and McQueen will need their passports as they find themselves in a new world of intrigue, thrills and fast-paced comedic escapades around the globe. "Cars 2" is being directed by Brad Lewis, producer of the Oscar®- winning film "Ratatouille."

Disney's is as follows:

August 26, 2008 - The Little Mermaid 3: Ariel's Beginning

Every Story Has a Beginning, But Only One Begins Under the Sea. The second and final Little Mermaid sequel. The plot explores the story of Athena, Ariel's mother, through the narration of Ariel.

November 26th, 2008 - Bolt

For super-dog Bolt (voiced by John Travolta), every day is filled with adventure, danger and intrigue -- at least until the cameras stop rolling. When the canine star of a hit TV show is accidentally shipped from his Hollywood soundstage to New York City, he begins his biggest adventure yet -- a cross-country journey through the real world. Armed only with the delusions that all his amazing feats and powers are real, and with the help of two unlikely traveling companions -- a jaded, abandoned housecat named Mittens (voiced by Susie Essman), and TV-obsessed hamster in a plastic ball named Rhino -- Bolt discovers he doesn't need superpowers to be a hero. Miley Cyrus ("Hannah Montana") brings her vocal talents to the role of Penny, Bolt's human co-star on the television series.

Christmas 2009 - The Princess and the Frog

A musical set in the greatest city of them all, New Orleans, "The Princess and the Frog" marks Disney's return to the timeless art form of traditional animation. The film teams Ron Clements and John Musker, creators of "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin," with Oscar®-winning composer Randy Newman to tell the most beautiful love story ever told ... with frogs, voodoo, and a singing alligator.

Christmas 2010 - Rapunzel

In this new telling of the classic fairy tale, "Rapunzel," audiences will be transported to a stunning CG fantasy world complete with the iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses. Expect adventure, heart, humor, and hair ... lots of hair, when Rapunzel unleashes her locks in theaters for the 2010 holiday.

Christmas 2012 - King of the Elves

Legendary storyteller Phillip K. *bleep*'s short story (his only experiment in the fantasy genre) becomes the basis for this fantastic and imaginative tale about an average man living in the Mississippi Delta, whose reluctant actions to help a desperate band of elves leads them to name him their new king. Joining the innocent and endangered elves as they attempt to escape from an evil and menacing troll, their unlikely new leader finds himself caught on a journey filled with unimaginable dangers and a chance to bring real meaning back to his own life.

They are also make four movies starring Tinkerbell from Peter Pan which will be direct to DVD/Blu-Ray. 4 because each one represents a season.

Little Mermaid 3 and Tinkerbell will be the last Direct-to-DVD sequels Disney ever makes. Pixar doesn't like sequels much. The only reason Toy Story 3 is being made is because Disney started it without Pixar's permission and it got so far along Pixar decided it would be better to release it than stop it. Your Thoughts on all these exciting films?

Huh. That's interesting. I wonder if it was a smart move to reveal all of their upcoming movies. Now people are going to expect the movies to be finished on those deadlines.

Thought they'd be a Little Mermaid 3. Would really like them to make Lion King 4. 3 wasn't that great.

I don't like sequals much, for example Bambi 2 (meh! XP) was a flop. But I think Newts looks good.

IF the producers know anything about the Holden/Ford war, I'll really like to see something like that in the film! big_smile

Re: Disney and Pixar's Slate Until 2012 Announced!

I don't understand what was so special about the original Cars flick and that warranting a sequel so much. But still, better that than hoping for a followup of a more powerful Pixar flick, namely Finding Nemo or Ratatouille. I have been hoping for a sequel to The Incredibles though; that had the foundations of a potential franchise that would develop strongly after the initial film was done.

Still, I hope it all goes well. My mother discussed WALL*E with me a couple of weeks back and it sounds like a big hit that Pixar will make a mark on, providing they'll continue to channel in just as much creative effort as their previous works.

Re: Disney and Pixar's Slate Until 2012 Announced!

Walt Disney (while he alive) didn't do sequels. in the mid-90s Disney created crappy sequels to just about all its films, great (Bambi, the Lion King, Dumbo)  decent (pocahantas) and medicore (Hunchback). Aladdin Mulan, Cinderella and now the Little Mermaid got 3 films. haven't seen any of the last 3 films' sequels. Lion King 1.5 doesn't count as 3 imo.the only films that didn't get sequels were Snow White, pinocchio, and Sleeping beauty

Re: Disney and Pixar's Slate Until 2012 Announced!

Spyrofriend - You're information isn't entirely correct. A lot more films DID NOT get sequels than the few you mentioned. Not every Disney film was *bleep*ed. When Pixar took over Disney animation they put a stop to all sequels in production to Disney films except for 5: Little Mermaid III and the four Tinker Bell films. Other than those, they scrapped about five other in-the-works sequels

There have been 46 released Disney animated films with four more in production:

Hidden text

1)    Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
2)    Pinocchio
3)    Fantasia
4)    Dumbo
5)    Bambi
6)    Saludos Amigos
7)    The Three Caballeros
8)    Make Mine Music
9)    Fun and Fancy Free
10)    Melody Time
11)    The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
12)    Cinderella
13)    Alice in Wonderland
14)    Peter Pan
15)    Lady and the Tramp
16)    Sleeping Beauty
17)    One Hundred and One Dalmatians
18)    The Sword in the Stone
19)    The Jungle Book
20)    The Aristocats
21)    Robin Hood
22)    The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
23)    The Rescuers
24)    The Fox and the Hound
25)    The Black Cauldron
26)    The Great Mouse Detective
27)    Oliver & Company
28)    The Little Mermaid
29)    The Rescuers Down Under
30)    Beauty and the Beast
31)    Aladdin
32)    The Lion King
33)    Pocahontas
34)    The Hunchback of Notre Dame
35)    Hercules
36)    Mulan
37)    Tarzan
38)    Fantasia 2000
39)    The Emperor's New Groove
40)    Atlantis: The Lost Empire
41)    Lilo & Stitch
42)    Treasure Planet
43)    Brother Bear
44)    Home on the Range
45)    Chicken Little
46)    Meet the Robinsons
47)    Bolt
48)    The Princess and the Frog
49)    Rapunzel
50)    King of the Elves

Those are the 'canon' Disney films - the ones made at Disney's core feature animation studio. They used to be labeled as the "Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection" but with the waning quality they dropped that label.

Here is a list of all the sequels, prequels, midquels and interquels to those 50 films:

Hidden text

1)    101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure
2)    Aladdin and the King of Thieves
3)    Atlantis: Milo's Return
4)    Bambi II
5)    Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas
6)    Belle's Magical World
7)    Brother Bear II
8)    Cinderella II: Dreams Come True
9)    Hercules: Zero to Hero
10)    Kronk's New Groove
11)    Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure
12)    Leroy & Stitch
13)    Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch
14)    Mulan II
15)    Piglet's Big Movie
16)    Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World
17)    Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin
18)    Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie
19)    Pooh's Heffalump Movie
20)    Return to Never Land
21)    Stitch! The Movie
22)    Tarzan & Jane
23)    Tarzan II
24)    The Fox and the Hound II
25)    The Hunchback of Notre Dame II
26)    The Jungle Book II
27)    The Lion King ½
28)    The Lion King II: Simba's Pride
29)    The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea
30)    The Little Mermaid III: Ariel's Beginning
31)    The Return of Jafar
32)    The Tigger Movie
33)    Tinker Bell
34)    Tinker Bell: A Midsummer Storm
35)    Tinker Bell: A Winter Story
36)    Tinker Bell: North of Neverland
37)    Winnie the Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Year
38)    Winnie the Pooh: Seasons of Giving
39)    Winnie the Pooh: Springtime with Roo
40) Disney Princess Enchanted Tales - Follow Your Dreams

Only 20 of the canon Disney films received a sequels and/or sequels.

Films not to receive sequels were:

Hidden text

1)    Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
2)    Pinocchio
3)    Dumbo
4)    Saludos Amigos
5)    The Three Caballeros
6)    Make Mine Music
7)    Fun and Fancy Free
8)    Melody Time
9)    The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
10)    Alice in Wonderland
11)    Sleeping Beauty (This is iffy as "Disney Princess Enchanted Tales - Follow Your Dreams" wasn't a full sequel)
12)    The Sword in the Stone
13)    The Aristocats
14)    Robin Hood
15)    The Black Cauldron
16)    The Great Mouse Detective
17)    Oliver & Company
18)    Treasure Planet
19)    Home on the Range
20)    Chicken Little
21)    Meet the Robinsons
22)    Bolt
23)    The Princess and the Frog
24)    Rapunzel
25)    King of the Elves

Planned but canceled sequels were:

Hidden text

1)    Chicken Little 2: The Ugly Duckling Story
2)    Disney's Dwarfs - a new direct-to-video franchise that hoped to capture the hearts of the "Lord of the Rings" crowd
3)    Dumbo II
4)    Fantasia 2006
5)    Hercules II: The Trojan War
6)    Meet the Robinsons 2: First Date
7)    The Aristocats 2

Rumored but not going to happen now sequels were:

Hidden text

8)    Mulan III
9)    Oliver & Company II
10)    Snow White 2
11)    The Rescuers III
12)    Oliver and Company II
13)    Peter Pan 3
14)    Sleeping Beauty 2

As you can see, a lot more sequels were canned because the new belief at Disney is quality, not quantity and far more films than Spyrofriend mentioned managed to remain sequel-free.

These are all awesome, I've heard of Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3 before.  However, WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE INCREDIBLES!? One of the writers in Pixar got interviewed and he said that there might be sequels to the Incredibles.

Thank you for the clarification. I for one am glad Disney stopped making direct to video sequels just about of them sucked. I had thought that there were far miore films that had been "seqeulized". Modt of the Disney films I have at home have had sequels made.

Re: Disney and Pixar's Slate Until 2012 Announced!

The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and Aladdin and the King of Thieves were quite good in my opinion. And Mulan II and Brother Bear II weren't that bad, but they could have been better. But the ones that I absolutely hate are Bambi II, The HB of Notre Dame II, 101 Dalmations II and The Jungle Book II, they were just appaling, I really enjoyed the first ones, especially Bambi and 101 Dalmations, the sequels were such a disappointment...... X(. Another rumoured film they are making (or were going to) is 103 Dalmations, though I'm not sure wether its a film with Glenn Close or an animated one. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

Yeah I agree with you Phoenix_Flyer,
101 Dalmations 2 and Jungle Book 2 were indeed horrible. I didn't mind Lion King 2 but my mom hated me watching it cause she hates Disney movies.

can't wait for Cars 2, or Wall E!

Oh and I know that they're making a Madagascar 2, and possibly a Shrek 4. (I KNOW that they're Dreamworks films, but this seemed like the appropriate place to mention it)

Bah, that's all I can say! Dreamworks always copies Disney, for example:

Dreamworks               Disney
Antz                           A Bug's life
Madagascar                The Wild (Disney worked on this for 4 yrs while Dreamworks worked on Madagascar for only 2)
Small Soldiers             Toy Story
EL Dorado                   The Emperor's New Groove

So, you see my point.  Dreamworks always rushes production in their movies to beat Disney and claim that "they were the originals."
