you get gems (see under your avatar) each time you make a post -- in most sections. in Forum Games and SPAM, you lose gems instead. years ago, that was meant to encourage people to post more in the regular sections of the forum, rather than just spamming all the time -- at this point though, i'm pretty sure it's just a matter of tradition.

about the gem system itself, it's hardly Bitcoin lol, but it's a cute little thing we had on the forum back in the day, and recently brought back. the gems you earn can be donated to other users, or used as "payment" for things on the website. (for example, my avatar / signature thread)
