How we know 2012 is not going to happen...

Predictions for the end of the world have been happening since year 101.

101-200 Various Prophets and Prophetesses of the Montanist movement predicted that Jesus would return sometime during their lifetime and establish the New Jerusalem in the city of Pepuza in Asia Minor.
365 Hilary of Poitiers Hilary of Poitiers, announced that the end would happen that year.[citation needed]
375-400 Martin of Tours Stated that the world would end before 400.[1]
500 Various The antipope Hippolytus and an earlier Christian academic Sextus Julius Africanus had predicted Armageddon at about this year.[citation needed]
6 April 793 Beatus of Liébana The Spanish monk Beatus of Liébana prophesied the second coming of Christ and the end of the world that day to a crowd of people. The crowd thinking that the world would end, fasted through the night. The following morning, Hordonius, one of the fasters, said, "Let's eat and drink, so that if we die at least we'll be fed."[citation needed]
968 Otto III's army An eclipse was interpreted as a prelude to the end of the world by the army of the German emperor Otto III.[citation needed]
992  Good Friday coincided with the Feast of the Annunciation; this had long been believed to be the event that would bring forth the Antichrist, and thus the end-times events foretold in the book of Revelation. Records from Germany report that a new sun rose in the north and that as many as 3 suns and 3 moons were fighting. There does not appear to be independent verification of this remarkable event.[citation needed]
1000 January 1 Various Many Christians in Europe had predicted the end of the world on this date. As the date approached, Christian armies waged war against some of the pagan countries in northern Europe, to convert them all to Christianity before Christ returned in the year 1000. Some Christians gave their possessions to the (Catholic) Church in anticipation of the end; however at the time the level of education was so low that many people were unaware of the year, reducing panic. When the world did not end, the Church did not return the gifts, and serious criticism followed; the Church reacted by killing some heretics. Agitation settled down quickly.[citation needed]
1000 May Legend The body of Charlemagne was disinterred on Pentecost. A legend had arisen that an emperor would rise from his sleep to fight the Antichrist.
1005-1006 Various A terrible famine throughout Europe was seen as a sign of the nearness of the end.
1033 Various Some believed this to be the 1000th anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus,, and his second coming was anticipated. Jesus' actual date of execution was and remains not known, but is believed to be between 27 and 33 CE.
1186 John of Toledo John of Toledo predicted the end of the world during 1186, based on the alignment of many planets.
1205 Joachim of Fiore Joachim of Fiore predicted in 1190 that the Antichrist was already in the world, and that King Richard of England would defeat him. The Millennium would then begin, some time before 1205.
1284 Pope Innocent III Pope Innocent III predicted that the world would end 666 years after the rise of Islam.[1]
1306 Gerard of Poehlde Gerard of Poehlde decided that the millennium had actually started in 306 CE during Constantine's reign. Thus, the world end was expected in 1306 CE.
1585 Michael Servetus In his book The Restoration of Christianity, the Spanish born reformer claimed that the Devil's reign in this world began in 325 AD, at the Council of Nicea, and will last for 1260 years, thus ending in 1585.[2]
1689 Benjamin Keach
16 October 1736 William Whiston Comet colliding with the earth.[3]
1792 Shakers
1806 The Prophet Hen of Leeds In Leeds, England in 1806 a hen began laying eggs on which the phrase "Christ is coming" was written.[4] Eventually it was discovered to be a hoax. The hoaxster had written on the eggs in a corrosive ink so as to etch the eggs, and reinserted the eggs back into the hen.[5] The Prophet Hen of Leeds
1843–1844 William Miller Miller predicted Christ would return between 21 March 1843 and 21 March 1844, then revised his prediction, claiming to have miscalculated Scripture, to 22 October 1844. The realization that the predictions were incorrect resulted in a Great Disappointment. Miller's theology gave rise to the Advent movement. The Baha'is believe that Christ did return as Miller predicted in 1844, with the advent of The Báb; numerous Miller-like prophetic predictions from many religions are given in the book Thief in The Night by Bahá'í William Sears.[6]
1867–1875 Rev. Michael Baxter Forty 'Wonders' occurring in the following seven years and seventy-five days including wars, famine, pestilence and earthquakes culminating in the return of Christ in 1875.[7]
1873 Jonas Wendell In 1870, Wendell published his views in the booklet entitled The Present Truth, or Meat in Due Season concluding that the Second Advent was sure to occur in 1873.[8]
1881 Mother Shipton A 15th Century prophet who in one of her publications said "The world to an end shall come, In eighteen hundred and eighty one"
1914 Charles Taze Russell "…the battle of the great day of God Almighty… The date of the close of that "battle" is definitely marked in Scripture as October 1914. It is already in progress, its beginning dating from October, 1874." [9]
1919 Albert Porta Alignment of planets causing the sun to explode.[3]
1925 Joseph F. Rutherford "Seventy jubilees of fifty years each would be a total of 3500 years. That period of time beginning 1575 before A.D. 1 of necessity would end in the fall of the year 1925, at which time the type ends and the great antitype must begin. What, then, should we expect to take place? The chief thing to be restored is the human race to life; and since other Scriptures definitely fix the fact that there will be a resurrection of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and other faithful ones of old, and that these will have the first favour, we may expect 1925 to witness the return of these faithful men of Israel from the condition of death, being resurrected and fully restored to perfect humanity and made the visible, legal representatives of the new order of things on earth."[10]
21 December 1954 Dorothy Martin Dorothy Martin, a housewife from Chicago claimed to have received messages from aliens via automatic writing which stated that the world would end in a great flood before dawn on 21 December 1954.[11] When Prophecy Fails
Summer of 1969 Charles Manson Manson predicted that an apocalyptic race war would occur in 1969 and ordered the Tate-LaBianca murders in an attempt to bring it about. Helter Skelter (Manson scenario)
11–21 January 1973 David Berg (Moses David of the Children of God) Colossal doomsday event in USA heralded by Comet Kohoutek[12][13]
1975 Frederick Franz As a main leader of Jehovah's Witnesses, he taught the 1975 is the end of 6000 years from the creation of the man to The End of the World. Many witnesses end up in poverty due to this prophesy.
1980 Leland Jensen In 1978 Jensen predicted that there would be a nuclear disaster in 1980, followed by two decades of conflict, culminating in God's Kingdom being established on earth.[14]
1980s and 2000 Hal Lindsey Lindsey has been continually predicting the end of the world since his 1970 book The Late, Great Planet Earth. His later books including The 1980s: Countdown to Armageddon and Planet Earth 2000 A.D.: Will Mankind Survive? gave revised dates.
1982 and 2000s Pat Robertson In late 1976 Robertson predicted that the end of the world was coming in October or November 1982. He also predicted various cataclysmic events for the first decade of the current century, including a Pacific Northwest tsunami "[15] and a Middle East war involving Russia[16] that did not happen. Pat Robertson
1988 Edgar C. Whisenant Whisenant predicted in his book 88 Reasons Why the Rapture Could Be in 1988 that the Rapture of the Christian Church would occur between 11 and 13 September 1988.[17]
23 April 1990 Elizabeth Clare Prophet Prophet predicted an impending nuclear holocaust, leading her followers to stockpile a shelter with supplies and weapons. Later, after Prophet's prediction did not come to pass and she was diagnosed with epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease, the group's leadership attempted to draw the focus of its work away from doomsday predictions.[18][19] The Summit Lighthouse
28 October 1992 Lee Jang Rim Rim, the leader of the Dami Mission in Seoul, predicted the Rapture for 28 October 1992. South Korean officials took elaborate precautions against a mass suicide, posting 1,500 riot officers to monitor about a thousand followers who had gathered in the group's headquarters to await the Rapture. Their efforts were successful, although four group members had committed suicide in previous days.[20]
9 June 1994 Pastor John Hinkle Hinkle of Christ Church in Los Angeles predicted the return of Christ this day.[21]
6 September 1994 Harold Camping Camping predicted the Rapture would occur on this date.[21]
26 March 1997 Marshall Applewhite Applewhite, leader of the Heaven's Gate cult, claimed that a spacecraft was trailing the Comet Hale-Bopp and argued that suicide was "the only way to evacuate this Earth" so that the cult members' souls could board the supposed craft and be taken to another "level of existence above human". Applewhite and 38 of his followers committed mass suicide. Heaven's Gate (religious group)
5 July 1998 Church of the SubGenius Claimed that aliens would invade and kill most of humanity (except for those SubGenii who had paid their membership fees, who would be taken into space, the Rupture). A society of evil clowns would rule over those left behind, whose souls would eventually be devoured by "Elder Gods". After the date passed without incident, claimed that memo from aliens was upside-down and the world would actually end on 5 July 8661 rather than 1998, or alternatively that the calendar was wrong and 5 July 1998 had not yet arrived. A joke[22]. X-Day (Church of the SubGenius)
2000 Various Predictions of a Y2K computer bug were to crash many computers and would malfunction causing major catastrophes worldwide and that society would cease to function. Year 2000 problem
1 January 2000 Credonia Mwerinde, Joseph Kibweteere An estimated 778 followers of this Ugandan religious movement perished in a devastating fire and a series of poisonings and killings that were either a group suicide or an orchestrated mass murder by group leaders after their predictions of the apocalypse failed to come about.[23] Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God
5 May 2000 Richard Noone In his book 5/5/2000 - Ice: The Ultimate Disaster, Noone predicted that the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn would align for the first time in 6,000 years. This would cause a catastrophic build-up of ice at the South pole, leading to devastation across the planet.[24] Cataclysmic pole shift hypothesis
May 2003 Nancy Lieder Lieder originally predicted the date for the Nibiru Collision as May 2003. According to her website, aliens in the Zeta Reticuli star system told her through messages via a brain implant of a planet which would enter our solar system and cause a pole shift on earth that would destroy most of humanity. [25]
Fall 2008 Ronald Weinland Weinland's 2006 book 2008: God's Final Witness predicts that hundreds of millions of people will die and, by the end of 2006, "there will be a maximum time of two years remaining before the world will be plunged into the worst time of all human history. By the fall of 2008, the United States will have collapsed as a world power, and no longer exist as an independent nation." The book noted that "Ronald Weinland places his reputation on the line as the end-time prophet of God."[26] Church of God Preparing for the Kingdom of God
21 May 2011 Harold Camping Camping predicted that the Rapture and devastating earthquakes would occur on 21 May 2011 with God taking approximately 3% of the world's population (200 million people) into Heaven. The actual end of the world was predicted to occur five months later.[27] 2011 end times prediction

[edit] FutureDate (CE) Author Description Article
21 October 2011 Harold Camping Camping had originally predicted the Rapture would occur on 21 May 2011, with the world ending on 21 October 2011. [28] His Family Radio network of stations spent millions of dollars on an information campaign, and some followers spent all their resources. When his original date failed to come about, Camping revised his prediction and said that on May 21, a "Spiritual Judgment" took place, and that both the physical Rapture and the end of the world would occur on 21 October 2011.[29][30] 2011 end times prediction
27 May 2012 Ronald Weinland Claims he has been appointed as one of God's end-time prophets, and that the world will end on 27 May 2012 Church of God Preparing for the Kingdom of God

Late 2012 Lindsey Williams During an interview for a radio program presented by Alex Jones, Williams predicted that by the end of 2012, the crisis in the Middle East would worsen and destroy the global economy, leading to the creation of a global currency. This would be the first step in establishing the New World Order and eventfully rise of the Antichrist told in the Book of Revelation or the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar.

2240 Talmud, Orthodox Judaism According to an opinion in the Talmud and mainstream Orthodox Judaism, the Messiah should come within 6000 years from the creation of Adam, and the world could possibly be destroyed 1000 years later. This would put the beginning of the period of desolation in the year 2240 CE and the end of the period of desolation in the year 3240 CE.[33] This is not strictly an "end of the world" scenario as it is cyclical in nature. The nature of the period of desolation is controversial and no one theory is binding. Year 6000
2280 Rashad Khalifa According to Rashad Khalifa's research on the Quran Code, the world will end in the year 2280 CE.[34]

Re: How we know 2012 is not going to happen...

2012 is just another example of religious dogma that some people believe with no evidence at all about what will happen. Worse yet, most people that DON'T believe that it will happen use it as a way to basically say, "Hey guys, I'm smarter than the average person because I don't believe something that I apparently think everyone else does. I'm so cool!"

If you tell people you believe it, you make yourself look like an idiot in the public's eye.
If you tell people you don't, you make yourself look like a self-centered jerk in the public's eye.

I'm sorry for coming off a bit strong (especially considering the conversation hasn't really escalated to 'that' level yet), but we've had these conversations before on this forum. It doesn't lead to anything good. It's just going to end up one or two people trying to give evidence about it while everyone else circles around and picks on them.

Re: How we know 2012 is not going to happen...

^ I completely agree; this is exactly what I thought about the rapture thing a few months ago. Almost no one actually did believe in it (I hadn't even heard of it until like a week before it was supposed to happen), but that didn't stop some people from parading around like they're the most intelligent beings on earth for not believing it and gloating when it didn't happen. Then I got told I was just trying to be "counter-culture" by being annoyed by that.... -__-

Tis because humans have to know everything that happens in this world, rather then to just leave it alone.

Re: How we know 2012 is not going to happen...

I believe 2012 will happen.

It'll happen the second after December 31st, 2011 at 11:59:59 PM local time.

Of course I know what this thread is pertaining to, it would have been nice to be more specific about it in the title.
