Whats wrong with my PS3?

I was playing Dragon Age and while i was playing i noticed that the sound cut off and the PS3 just shut itself off. When i tried to turn it on.it just froze and shut itself off again. I've had the PS3 since launch. Can anyone tell me whats wrong?

The original PS3 probably has a less efficient processor, so it might be overheating. Have you recently been placing it on a carpet or tablecloth? That may block the vents and prevent air circulation. If it's not that, it may be dead.

Its been on my giant table stand ever since i've had it. My entire rooms floor is carpet and is below the PS3.

Have you ever cleaned the dust out of it? If you have pets, it could have a clump of hair blocking the fan.

I always clean the dust from the surface and the sides once in a while.

If it's overheating, you can use a low setting on a vacuam cleaner, and vacuam the vents. That's the Sony advice, but if you use high suction, there's always a chance the dust will rush around and build up a static charge, which will render your chip or whatever absolutely useless. Except maybe as a toothpick.

Actually, my PS3 once absolutely melted in hot weather. I had to get a new one. If that's happened to you, kiss goodbye to all that save data you had.

Anyway, assuming it's not been completely obliterated, if you've been using it for years and you've never cleaned it, there's likely to be a fair amount of dust jamming the fans, cloaking the processor, etc. Dust is an insulator, and if it's covering your processor, the heat can't get out. Your warranty is void by now, I assume, so to really clean it, you'll need to take it apart. The little guide Jazz posted is fine for that. Makes sure you have all the screwdrivers it wants, and also a magnetic pick-up tool. You'll need to deal with the threat of static electricity, and a grounding bracelet would work, but I've heard getting naked is even more effective.

Also, read the whole thing before starting. Trust me, it's not the taking apart that's difficult, it's the putting back together. The amount of rage-fuelled hammering I did on my dissassembly was just criminal.

That's a myth. I've only heard this in Megatokyo, everywhere else it is shown as being BS. Use this guide. Don't go naked, that's just a joke -_-

In other news i got a slim PS3 the other day. Luckily i have a backup of my previous PS3 but unfortuanly my Dragon Age savefiles were lost because there were copy protected.
