Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

More realism than the plots in iCarly.  That's a plus.

right.

The characters are drawn cute

wrong.

the one with Applejack taking down these apples on all these trees by herself and begins to get really tired. When she helps the other ponies, she makes a lot of mistakes and causes trouble.

... what?!

i can't get into this show. it wasn't that bad at the beginning, but then the characters started talking, and saying things, and it just seemed so... so... asinine. every time one of them talks, i want to smack myself with a tire iron.

the utter cuteness disgusts me, and i love cute, and i'll get on my e-knees now and shamelessly proclaim it to everyone on this planet, the entire physical plane, the astral plane, and the dark skies of the black metal domain on which i've based the foundation for my earthly existence: I LOVE CUTENESS. but the utter cuteness/innocence depicted in the little bit of this that i could stand is just ridiculous, taken completely over the top to the point of removing any worth or substance that a show with the words "Friendship Is Magic" could have potentially held, which was minimal from the get-go. the opening comes on, using music and fast-paced animation to excite the viewer and prepare him/her for entertainment, and i'll admit that it worked. the cuteness was effective, and sucked me in to watch a few more seconds of this nonsense. and then once again they began talking again, with dialogue pretty *bleep*ing similar to a circle of cheerleaders, were they in the same situation these ponies are, and the three or four support beams that had become the building of hope i had for this societal sensation came crashing down around me.

if this is the modern form of human entertainment, i'll denounce my humanity this very second and declare myself a winged monster. oh wait, i already have.

i just genuinely see no worth in this show even existing; the storyline is on a one-way ticket to somewhere more uninteresting than the area it took off from, the lack of depth in these characters is outdone only by my lack of tolerance for them, and the idea of any long-term entertainment is thrown out the window in favor of the show instead dripping, no, pouring, utter cuteness/happiness, which does not, by itself, make something worth watching.

but this, all of this, is just my opinion, that i've honestly just needed to get out for a very long time now, that i feel very strongly about.
my two (or three, counting how long this thing is), cents.
one man's smear on the carpet of entertainment, is another man's joy.
i'm done my smearing on the carpet, so continue speaking your joys.

Haha, prepare yourself my friend  (:)

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

It's definitely not for everyone. No one ever tried to say it was, though. Some time ago I would have gone through this thread and attempted to dissect each negative thing and explain why each one is wrong, but I feel no urge to do that now, if that's what you're expecting, RDX.

I'll say this, though. 36IStillLikeSpyro36, I think you're kind of overreacting. Not sure if you're exaggerating to make a point, but... wow. XD

I'll also say I don't like the show just for the cuteness; I think the characters themselves are honestly pretty entertaining.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

the theatrical tone was intentional; the exaggeration in so much of my post was put in to make a point, yes. and, in a sense, throw in a bit of entertainment myself. i should probably clarify that now, before people start forming in-depth replies to it.

but the core opinion holds very true.

Your post actually reminded me of a show that seemed so similar to MLP in terms of personality.

There was a show on a couple of years ago. I only watched it on a single weekend so I don't remember the name. But there were these three high-school girls who were agents or something.

From you? Not really so since you are pretty mature on how you go about things. But from others you never truly know  :-P

I think I know the show you're talking about. Was it "Totally Spies," by any chance?

I never watched much of it. The characters were really shallow from what little I remember.

That's it. The MLP characters act EXACTLY like those three. Except in more extremes.

Huh, really? I remember hating that show for how annoying they were, but the ponies don't annoy me at all.

But like I said, it's been a loooong time since I've seen that show, so it might be better than I remember. But I doubt it.

When you said preppy cheerleader circle. I just made the connection between it and realized it was a complete 1:1.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

All I can say about character development is that you have to watch the episodes centred around each character to see that, it doesn't all happen in the first few episodes, nor is it possible to fit it all in them.
For example most people dislike (or hate) Rarity until she has a few episodes which are more focussed around her and expand on her character.
Also I tend to watch the show more because it's hilarious rather than because it's cute - I just think it's so funny.
I do understand though that some of you just don't like the show and I can't say anything to change that, just thought I'd try to explain some things.

I've seen that one where they all go into the past for those markings. None of those reflect on how they act in the show now. Even then, I shouldn't need to view each specific show individually to understand their way of thinking, especially in a 30-minute show.

Even then, the characters seem just "extreme" in their own way, and considering they are personifications of humans, it really makes them seem easily stereotyped.

I don't think I'm thinking of the same episode(s) you are, doesn't matter.

Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Because this is not a pony fan site, I sense that the argument against the show will gravitate to be the stronger side.  I am not pointing fingers, I just want to point out that non-fans will probably have the advantage in this topic if an argument in sues.  But an argument doesn't have to happen, and it looks like it wont.  I only say this because of a bad experience *coughdarkspyrocough* I had with another pony thread.

I agree that all of the reason everyone has to not like this show are valid, except one.

Neo, I was surprised to hear you criticize the character development in the show.  Sure the show is a cartoon and is riddled with several plotholes.  But character development is one of the show's strong points for me.  The story writers seemed to have made a heavy effort to give each main character a strong personality and interesting backstory.  "The Cutie Mark Chronicles" is a great episode that features all of the mane 6's backstory and tells how they earned their cutiemark.

It may take a entire view of the season to notice it, but I guess it doesn't really matter if you're not gonna go that far.

Trust me, I'm not one of those people who automatically favors animals over my own species. roll I just don't see stereotypical cheerleader personalities in the ponies at all.

Is it bad that I'm totally loving Rainbow Dash? She has the tom-boyish personality that I've always liked in characters since I was a kid. I wouldn't be surprised if my current self was based a lot on characters like her haha.
