Re: PSN
Neotyguy40 wrote:Seriously, I only say that because it's true. This thread isn't about Xbox vs. PS3.
I'd like to inform you that you ... are wrong.
This thread was created to discuss how terrible the PSN is. Well, it's actually
about the PSN's down-time, but I like to throw in the word "terrible."
You tell me I am wrong? And then you completely agree with me about what the thread is about?
Please elaborate. I'm confused, because all I implied was that this thread was not about a console war.
I agree with SapphireSheep on this one. I've studied a lot of different
perspectives about these two consoles, including their CPU, physical
durability, controller design, number of games and their "fun" level, other
hardware and software parts, Internet play reliability, amount of players
for Internet play, Kinect vs PS3 Move, etc.I've seen it all.
In the end, the only bad thing about the Xbox 360 is that if you tilt the
console while a disk is spinning inside, the disk could get scratched. Even
with that, the Xbox 360 is, realistically, the better console.
And you're telling me this... Why?
I personally don't care which console is better. In fact, your entire post was based on your opinion that Xbox was better than PS3 when I never, ever, at ANY POINT in my post said that PS3 was better, or that Xbox was worse, or ANYTHING relating to my opinion about consoles. I don't know why you are responding to me about this stuff.
Maybe it would be better if you guys made another thread about this and let us discuss what the thread was intended for: Discussing the events surrounding the PSN downtime, not the status of a war between fanboys.
Now if we can get back on topic...
Neotguy40: Other than the DDOSing (which they stopped) there's no proof that the attacks were anything to do with Anonymous, and many people think it was one of the Sony workers who got fired.
There's no proof that the downtime had anything to do with a Sony worker who got fired. And many people think it was a group of Anonymous that was still angry at Sony.
Jackson117: Calm down, I was just pointing out that people blame hackers when this is not their fault. Piracy wasn't even possible on geohot's custom firmware, and as I said, none of the devs making backup managers (enabling piracy) got sued. Neither has PSN being down got anything to do with the hackers.
Do not think I am defending Sony when I say this, because I think they are in the wrong:
Geohot's custom firmware is called a "jailbreak". A jailbreak allows direct access to the memory of the system. If you have access to that memory, running an unauthorized game is very easily done by a simple buffer overflow. Pirates were able to, and DID pirate games using his hack.
I agree with you when you say hackers aren't at fault. However, like I said before, crackers use tools that hackers make for malicious purposes, which is an example of what Geohot's hack was. I think a very good analogy would be to compare this to gun control laws and the motto "Guns don't kill people. People kill people". The ones at fault aren't the gun manufacturers (Geohot) or the government (Sony). It's the fault of the murderers (crackers and pirates).
Sony sued Geohot to show a principle of not to jailbreak their system, which is why they settled for just having Geohot not distribute his hack to the world. This was a horrible decision on Sony's part, but:
This is ALL Sony's fault anyway.
I don't think ALL the fault is on Sony. I mean, I don't think Sony is at any less fault than you do, but I think that the crackers and pirates are also at fault.
However, if you are right and Sony wasn't hacked, then I don't see how this Geohot thing would matter in this case.

I know you can patch the games and make an installable PUP to run pirated games on geohot's jailbreak, but most people switched from his firmware to others which would run backup managers quite quickly, and he at least made an effort to block piracy. Anyway, most of the people who just used his jailbreak found it too complicated to make their own PUPs.
I blame Sony because they removed a feature (I'm certain illegally in at least on country, they're getting/got sued there) from the PS3 which they shouldn't have done. They also shouldn't have gone suing all the hackers (and if they sued anyone, it should have been backup manager devs). The main reason though is that they were using a software with well-known vulnerabilities (how do you think Anonymous could have known that?), so it's their fault that PSN info got stolen.

Are you talking to me? Because I don't support cracking of anything.

Where did I say it was right? I said it was their fault the information got stolen, because they KNEW about the vulnerabilities in their security and did nothing about them. The only other thing I said was that I don't think it was Anonymous who stole the information, so I don't think they're in the wrong.

Re: PSN
There was a Supreme Court case years ago regarding jailbroken iPhones. It was ruled that the user has the right to jailbreak a phone to use unofficial software*, but the tech manufacturer/programmer has the right to try and prevent or discourage jailbreaks, such as by banning from an online community (remember the news about Modern Warfare 2?).
*(does not mean pirated software)
That ruling applies to mobile devices, and I assume it applies to non-mobile devices as well, so Sony is partially to blame because its central systems were not secured and the anti-jailbreak attempts were not countered.
I have a Wii with Homebrew installed. I used the SSBB method because (1) I have that game, so it was convenient, and (2) the previous methods, (Twilight Princess and Yu-gi-oh methods) were made invalid by Wii software updates. I'm not familiar with the PSN's security, but it might have been preventable.
Yo, Spyro
I'm really happy for you, but Jazz Jackrabbit is one of the best platformers of all time.

I see you ignored my response, therefore your ignoring my comment through aggressive it was is a shout-back to your comment about Hackers. The Attack was by Anonymous (Not stating the group or such)/

And you're telling me this... Why?
I personally don't care which console is better. In fact, your entire post was based on your opinion that Xbox was better than PS3 ... blah blah blah
Did you not see the interesting little page break I added in? I put it there to
indicate that I split from talking to you to talk to readers in general. And yes,
I was stating my opinion. Would you like to cry on my shoulder?

See? Page break. Here's another one:

Do you see it?

Yes, Swaffy, we see the page break, but the fact remains that the entire point of your post was to gloat about how superior the Xbox is, which is not in any way what this thread is about. No part of the post, before or after the page break, was related to the topic, so enough with the smug attitude. =/
If you guys want to debate over which console is better, go and dig up the "console war" thread. It's probably at the bottom of the first page of General Chat by now.

THIS! Christ, can't we all get back on topic? It sucks that PSN is down, yes! But at the end of the day I'll have no regrets owning the PS3! So, for all you freaking fanboys fighting which console is better, just SHUT UP! Thank you!

What? Other than the original DDOSing (which I say again, they stopped), there is NO proof that Anonymous have carried out any attacks, including the stolen PSN information.
