Anime 101
Alright guys. Many of you, as I guess, are into anime. For some reason it comes with the online identity for people consider themselves gamers, artists, or hardcore RPGers, or anywhere in between. (Not judging)
I do not like anime.
Really only because I never got into it, I don't dislike it either, I just never tapped into the anime world.
However, I am definately willing to give it a chance. I know "What's a good anime?" is like asking "What's a good cartoon?" There may not be one correct answer.
So I'm asking the SF community to help me out.
I want to give anime a chance. Where should I start?

Ouran High has alot of... Yaoi.... aka male X male stuff and is normly for girls who are into that. Not saying that there is anything wrong what goes on in the anime, but not really one to recommended to some one just starting to watch anime.
here are some that i would reccomend. half of what i have watched isnt popping to mind at the moment.
Non graphical ones:
Dragon Drive
Legendz (only in japanies with english subtitles)
Star Ocean EX (based on the game star ocean the second story game)
Elemental Gelade
ones with a bit of blood due to violance:
Gundam Wing
Gundam Seed
Black Cat
Bleach (but gots old after a while.
More graphical:
Ergo Proxy
Fate Stay Night(can be slightly over dosed like mortal Kombat)
Wolves Rain
Umm there are other ones i can recommended... I know some uber bloody ones which i wouldn't recommended unless you like anime and get used to how they work. And some which have alot of guy humor with perverted joked all the time but I wont post those names.
I am a starting artist and video editor.

Hey guys, "friend" here, saying that Kaiji is one of the most incredible animes EVER.
But, is it good for a beginner? ...No. I think you have to get into anime before you jump into something obscure like Kaiji. Start with something mainstream, but not the crappy mainstream, the good mainstream. For example, Death Note or the Melancholy Haruhi Suzumiya. Both are good shows. I would highly recommend Death Note over Haruhi though, just my personal taste.
Here's a list of other awesome shows for people getting into anime-
Code Geass
Monster
One Outs (for baseball fans especially, although you don't need to know anything about baseball to enjoy it)
Angel Beats (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Hajime no Ippo (great fights, inspirational)
Higurashi no naku koro ni (if you like extreme violence and cute girls)
Watch a few of those, and then watch Kaiji. Kaiji is brilliant.

Yeah, I would prefer to start with something more traditional.

I have a very profound "go big or go home" attitude about most things. So, as I will make sure my first anime experiences are foolproof, Kaiji sounds like something I would really enjoy by just how you explain it.
There are different types of anime. What sort of thing are you looking for?
I understand this question. However, it's hard for someone who is not into anime to be able to tell the difference the types of anime they are. Sometimes they all look the same.
If type means genre, I guess I could go for Dark Dramas or Science Fiction, among others...
These are good lists, guys, thanks a lot!

Re: Anime 101
Yes, genre is exactly what I meant. Try to think of anime as western animation with different styles if your new to it.
I can't recall any dark dramas, other than Higurashi perhaps, but for sci fi you should defiantly try out Noein, Ghost in The Shell, and Read or Die.

Re: Anime 101
I found something else to help me out with the different genre's of anime. I have a Netflix account, and they list a few varieties of "anime." they include: action, comedy, drama, fantasy, feature films, horror,, sci-fi, series, and kid's anime.
Of the one's available for instant play, the highest rated (by users) are:
-Full Metal Alchemist series
-Darker than Black series
-Ouran series
-Moribito series
-Ghost in the Shell film and series
-Mushi-Shi
-Soul Eater series
-Cowboy Bebop movie
-Halo Legends
I'm going to start with the 1995 Ghost in the Shell and by the time I start with SAC, I will have made a decision of whether or not this attempt to become an anime fan succeeds.
When I added some of these, it recommended Queen's Blade, but it looked stupid...
