Re: This is disgusting.... really really sad....
It's just like deer hunting and rabbit hunting, and like Stormy stated;; it keeps the population under control. In some areas there are too many and they can feed off and are a possible threat to farms if they kill and take the livestock.

Re: This is disgusting.... really really sad....
I think some are seeing it the wrong way because when the article only describes hunting as a reason for killing off wolves legitimately, it sounds trivial. But what's not really stated in the article are the more practical problems that we're discussing right now.

Re: This is disgusting.... really really sad....
And hunting them (at least controlled hunting) actually is helping them survive because they don't hunt their prey to the point where they have nothing left to eat.
Also, what about people who live in rural areas with lots of farms? The wolf population needs to be kept under control or farm animals and even people could get attacked when the wolves get desperate for food.
If they were hunting on a reservation, I'd agree with you. As it is, though, this is necessary. I don't, however, agree with whoever wrote that article; he seems to want as few wolves as possible so there can be more hunting. There just needs to be balance.
Lots of people around here kill wolves and coyotes when they try to attack their livestock (cows, chickens, etc etc).

Yes that is understandable, of course, but only if nessacary, they should try to scare them off if anything, if it's keepsa coming THEN that shotgun should be used as a last resort.

I think you need to understand the situation to determine whether scare tactics are effective. I don't hunt, so I cannot provide an answer to that either. You're just speaking out of desperation now.

Re: This is disgusting.... really really sad....
I tell you what I'm a little puzzled about. The fact that most of you that argue against this have called the wolves, "beautiful", or something to that effect. Why does aesthetic brilliance give them a larger right to live than the dozen or so deer whom they eat every year? The wolves are getting let off because they're the pretty boys of the forest?
Wolves are sometimes cannibals. Unlike most creatures, when food is low, wolves will eat members of their pack who have died, from starvation or from a dispute. Wolves are intolerant of coyote presence, and have been known to dig up coyote pups and kill them. Wolves do not always kill their prey outright, but may allow the animal to bleed to death. Wolves will sometimes kill pregnant animals to feed on the foetus. When non-rabid wolves attack humans, the targets are mainly women and children.
I do wonder how well wolf-supporters would fare without the wolf image to help them.
And Saphira, your argument is invalid, as wolves are currently at a "Least Concern" status, rated by the IUCN, suggesting that they aren't endangered whatsoever.

Re: This is disgusting.... really really sad....
Here's my argument: Are elk endangered? No. Are wolves? Yes. Isn't killing endangered animals a crime?
The issue is regional, and applies more to the Rocky Mountain states of western US - I have heard that there is an unfortunate decline there. In western Canada (and perhaps other places), wolves are commonplace.

Yeah, you've just answered your own question. The wolf imagery is projected in the media as something more "handsome", "brave", and "independent" (although I'd still question some of these implications) while elks et al are generally not recognized for such traits. As a result, the idolization of wolves in the media is more prominent and in this case is likely the reason for people reacting sharply to the killings of the animal they love. I mean, Okami, Twilight, Link: TP are all examples of the outrageous popularity of these canines.
So you can spare yourself the trouble of explaining the ecological reality of wolves.
Anyways, back on topic.

I'm afraid to click that link... really afraid to click it... I just hate how human beings think they can fix things...
It's a mental illness to want to hunt animals just for the sport of it, and just hearing about this leaves me on the verge of tears, but never surprises me.
Elks were put there to be eaten by wolves. We should leave things the way God intended instead of taking matters into our own hands. Human beings (not all, but a lot of them) are absolute *bleep*s.

Please cite what this mental illness is.

I have a hard time believing God would create an insentient being just to serve another insentient being... besides, since we are his creation as well, we have just as much of a right to influence nature.
Well, this is encroaching a bit into religious territory, so I'll take it easy.

Why has this thread taken a turn for the dumber? The past few posts still only addresses the wolves, and fails to address anything else. Please give some thought into the matter people if you intend to post...

Yup, but of course you only made the statements after the fact they were mentioned beforehand. I think you gotta put some of your own thoughts into it, not repeating what I said earlier. ![]()

Re: This is disgusting.... really really sad....
Well this certainly is an entertaining read...and I really don't feel like putting too much into the subject, but as a hunter (not wolves), those who hunt with responsibility do so by means of helping with overpopulation and or food requirements.
Granted many more idiot hunters who do it simply for the pure enjoyment of killing are out there, but you can't really control what they do. Anyways Wolves are a very striking image yes, and I suppose you can see them as a noble animal, but I wouldn't hesitate to kill one if it was threatening either myself or my property.
Regardless, if someone is hunting for both the thrill of the sport and to help maintain the "survival of the fittest" mentality in the wilderness, then I have no argument with them.

What's the difference between the pleasure of killing and the "thrill of the sport"?

You could say the hunters who go out at night and shoot game using headlights to make them freeze, which I see mainly as doing it for the pleasure of shooting rather then actually stalking and hunting the animal.
When deer hunting that is considered a very dishonorable thing to do..because you didn't work to outsmart the prey, instead just doing it the easy way. Now If I'm hunting game you want to do it in a respectable fashion at least.
Death is part of life either way..but taking it in a more honorable fashion is the proper way to hunt...unless of course you're starving and would so anything to get meat lol.....that doesn't happen much.

Re: This is disgusting.... really really sad....
I love how people aren't reading the other posts and are saying that shooting wolves is the most horrible crime in the world without thinking through what the reasons behind it might be at all. Come on forum, you can do better than this. >__> Show some critical thinking here.
If you think it's so bad to kill wolves, read some of the other posts in the thread and then tell my why controlled hunting of them is bad. "They're beautiful animals" doesn't count as a good reason.

Re: This is disgusting.... really really sad....
Topic bump. On a different site, I asked why some were crazy over wolves. Here's my first response (lunatics confirmed):
Wolves are awesome! They live yearlong in the freezing, below zero temperatures in the tundra, hunt and kill moose and other large deer, and countless other prey, and the best part, they howl.
This gave me a good laugh. All the more reason why I bet some people would randomly howl in full moonlight. And they're probably on Jacob's team or something.
