Ohhhh Virus my bad, I misread your post. Yeaaahhhh when it comes to a Virus your best chance is to get the drive wiped. Either manually or through services.

Pretty sweet I must say, and I know that you were not yelling so don't worry about it smile I misread things a lot when I'm tired...and I'm tired most of the time.

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?

A "Heur" Virus that your talking about seems to sound like a Heuristic detection to me, which may or may not be malware. A Hurestic detection doesn't necessarily detect the actual type of virus, just the way it behaves. I don't think its right to be asking if XXXX can remove a heuristically detected executable because it can be thousands of different types of code. Trojan and Virus are diferent, btw, so its a bit strange to be calling the "Heur" virus a trojan.

Kubuntu/Edubuntu, etc etc is just branches of Ubuntu.

Avast is a useless antivirus scanner. Kaspersky has the best heuristic and proactive defences ive seen, but I changed my mind about using it when it decided to block and delete system files. Right now, im just using comodo firewall (free) with microsoft security essentials. Security essentials seems to be pretty good, is free, and is pretty lightweight.

I am using "Eset nod32 antivirus" and "spybot search and destroy". Eset isn't freeware but it is very good.(spybot is free) I have it on my new computer. But I need some freeware on my old computer. I have Avast here :barf:

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?

Nod32 is probably my second choice, its pretty good.

Malware will disable your firewall, although its not as common anymore because users realize that and think they are infected. Most malware now either adds an exception to the windows firewall, or injects itself into a known and whitelisted program in order to communicate without setting off alerts.

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?

I just wish MS would get rid of their registry and lock up the core files.

The thing is, even if you do that repair with the disk, it will delete the registry files that are for 3rd party software that is good.

Pretty daunting for an average consumer.

I got crossover pro 8 for Mac, and now I can run all my windows programs without needing to switch over... Yay!

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?

Its funny, people always want to run windows apps on osx, but I don't ever hear anyone complaining about running osx apps on windows tongue

I don't believe your registry gets cleared when you repair your installation. If your registry is corrupted, just restore it from a previously backed up version that was created with system restore automatically.

The registry is messy, but how do you plan on removing it when thousands of 3rd party developers rely on it? Its up to the developers to choose where to store user settings or whatever other data.

Core files are locked. You can't just go deleting them or editing them.

I hear plenty of people complain about FCP and iLife, not to mention the only way to develop on the iPhone is using an Intel Mac.

Although I am talking from the higher end perspective since Macs have more then 90% of the market share for computers $1000 and up.

The thing is, Macs are cheap for what you get in them... REALLY cheap... People say they can get a computer that has the same specs cheaper then a Mac, and they usually compare it to the iMac, but the thing is? Your also paying for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and a copy of iLife.

Let's see how this stacks up, and to prove the point further? I'll select everything from Dell, which is one of the cheapest manufacturers for computers in the world:

Let's say we customize a Dell XPS 630 with this (Note that when adding the mouse and keyboard, you can see I added the cheapest compatible ones available):

- Intel® Core™2 E8400 (6MB,3.0 GHz, 1333FSB)
- nVidia GeForce GTS 240, 1024MB
- 4GB Dual Ch Corsair EPP DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz - 2 DIMMs
- 500GB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache
- 21.5 inch Dell S2209W Full HD Widescreen Monitor
- Bose Companion 2 Series II Multimedia Speaker System
- Razer Lycosa Gaming Keyboard (ships separately)
- Alienware TactX™ Mouse

That is about the same thing you get for the lowest end iMac that costs $1199... The price for such a thing? $1573... Now even then the GPU, RAM, Audio, and CPU are better in the iMac, even if only a little.

Of course, that's with a tower computer, so we wouldn't be making a fair comparison unless we compared it to an all-in-one computer like the iMac, would we? Let's check out the XPS One computer:

- XPS One™ with 24-inch widescreen display
- Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q8200 processor
- 4GB DDR2 SDRAM
- Integrated Intel® GMA X4500HD Graphics
- 320GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive

Granted, the processor beats the iMac's, and the screen is 2 inches bigger, but the lower end iMac has faster memory, much better graphics card, and a larger hard drive. The price of the XPS One? $1499, and I would use that extra $300 on an upgrade to get 8GB of RAM with $100 left over.

At times like these, I like to point out a quote from an MS Fanboy:

"Mac users have made conscious technology choice and are therefore better informed than their peers."

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?

Ive always hated the way the apple laptops looked, and I hate the os, so I don't understand how anyone expects me to buy one. What am I going to do, buy one then buy another copy of windows 7 so I can run windows on it? Thats smart, isn't it, pay a lot for hardware then pay even more to get the OS you want when you can just buy a product from MSI/dell/gateway/etc etc etc and get the OS preinstalled.

BTW, the dell studio one 19 easily competes with the low end iMac, http://www.dell.com/content/products/pr … dio-one-19 Plus you get a touchscreen for whatever reason you'd want one. If I really cared I could have researched a bit longer for another AIO pc, but I don't.

Who really cares about market share for pcs over $1000? It doesn't surprise me that apple has a higher market share for pcs over $1000, its people who have been misinformed about what they actually need and go a head and buy what they think is "in style". Apple has always tried to promote their products as some sort of hip new flashy alternative. The market for pcs over $1000 is very very small compared to whats going on now with the regular consumers. Where the market is at right now, the regular user is looking at $600 for a decent laptop. I walked into Fry's electronics yesterday and every single person that was looking for laptops was buying either netbooks or $400-$600 laptops for school. There's no better thing out there for students and families, you get the most bang for your buck no matter how you look at it. Want more power? Then find something else that works for you.

No smart person would develop for the iphone anymore, android is where its at. There are going to be hundreds of android phones in the next year or so, along with a much more open market then apple's restrictive app store. Its been predicted that android will move up to #2 phone os near 2012, but its already picking up steam now.

I'm pretty sure I can do everything I could with iLife with Windows Live downloads (With the exception of garage band), which is also free. I believe you need to pay like $80 for iLife '09, according to wikipedia. Ouch. Garage band isn't worth $80 to me, you can get audacity and some free loops for free.

Yeah, some quote from some random guy really strengthens your argument eh? Its easy to state an opinion. I could just as easily say the same thing about apple fanboys. Most of them think they are cool because of a product they buy. Its a computer, not some sort of a social movement.

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?

This is one of the very few intelligent conversations that are in the General
Chat section right now. SpyroForum seems to be getting polluted by emo
kids right now, and the newer threads are getting on my nerves just
because of their sheer illiteracy.

Personally, I would prefer the Windows XP 7. Vista is a bit geared towards
looks and "fun" add-ons, and XP 7 is more toward what a computer was
meant to be. Also, games and game editing programs are more compatible
with XP 7.

In the "Mac vs. PC" arguement, I go with PCs. Here's one reason: Much
more applications and programs can be run on PCs. Many programs have
to be specially redesigned to be compatible with the Mac. So in getting a
PC, you are able to do much more on it than you would on a Mac.

Re: What is your favorite computer OS?

It's just called Windows 7, XP is a separate OS.

As for Macs vs. PCs, I'll have to agree with Swaffy, PCs ftw.

Am I one of the emo kids Swaffy? I hope not

Exactly why I use CrossOver, Windows is too expensive.

BTW, the dell studio one 19 easily competes with the low end iMac, http://www.dell.com/content/products/pr … dio-one-19 Plus you get a touchscreen for whatever reason you'd want one. If I really cared I could have researched a bit longer for another AIO pc, but I don't.

That may be 'near' it, but still not better in forms of specs. The screen is smaller by almost half a foot, it has slower RAM, and sound is lower quality. That, plus it is $1,252 without the temporary discount.

Who really cares about market share for pcs over $1000? It doesn't surprise me that apple has a higher market share for pcs over $1000, its people who have been misinformed about what they actually need and go a head and buy what they think is "in style". While I admit most people buy lower priced computers more often, those of us who actually want a good quality computer that actually has power in it spend more then $1000. I am using an iMac from 4 years ago that has the same power as the average $600 dell desktop.

No smart person would develop for the iphone anymore, android is where its at. There are going to be hundreds of android phones in the next year or so, along with a much more open market then apple's restrictive app store. Its been predicted that android will move up to #2 phone os near 2012, but its already picking up steam now.

Android is NOT where 'it's at'. I can speak from experience that Android takes much longer to develop for, and there is not nearly as many APIs that give flexibility.

Well just to let you know, iLife comes free with every new Mac, and the only way you would need to pay for it is if you built your own Hackintosh and want iLife. In which case, you would also need the Box Set, which comes with OSX, iLife, and iWork for less then Windows.

Yeah, some quote from some random guy really strengthens your argument eh? Its easy to state an opinion. I could just as easily say the same thing about apple fanboys. Most of them think they are cool because of a product they buy. Its a computer, not some sort of a social movement.

Choice

I would also like to point out that 68% of all people who try a Mac, point out they liked it better then Windows. And 11% of the others say they won't switch because they can't afford it.

Ive always hated the way the apple laptops looked

o_O

I've never met anyone who said they don't like how the Mac looks... Even MS fanboys that I've debated with before...

Where are you getting your statistics from?

Have you ever programmed for android, or iphone for that matter? Android is basically java with apis. Its much more flexible then anything you can do with the iphone, which includes background services. Android is much more user friendly for developers and users. Review of the iphone+android sdks: http://www.infoworld.com/d/developer-wo … iphone-074

Windows 7 is expensive, so is every other windows version when it was launched because of how different the the oses are. A new osx version seems more like a service pack. Students can get win7 for $30 if they wanted.

Many people in my family use cheap $500 notebooks for office work and the such, they use them because they work. Not because they need to spend more than a grand on a laptop that can do the same thing that they need done.

The argument is always, "oh hey I can run windows apps on my mac", well guess what? I can run windows apps on my windows laptop. I don't see the advantage to buying an apple laptop if I can do everything with what I have.

Apple macbooks look too effeminate to me, and I don't like the dock type thing. Looks like too much clutter.

Lets take a look at so called better informed Neotyguy:

-Makes claims that all executables can be decompiled back into source code.

Whatever you can make for Mac, you can make for Windows. You just need to compile it to fit into an exe.

Clock speeds are almost 50% faster than Windows

Everything that I make on Mac I can port to windows in less then half an hour.

LOL @ ^ different apis ftw LOL
