HOWTO: Copy off music from Spyro 1, 2 and 3

HOWTO: Copy off music from Spyro 1, 2 and 3

By request of NightSpyro.

(Yes, I take technical requests. Send me a PM on what you need! wink)
-----------------------------------------------------------

Okay, It was a coincidence I just got an MP3 player from a clearout sale. I wanted to load some PS1 Spyro music on it and it coincided with NightSpyro's post. So I decided to take pictures on the way.

YOU'LL NEED:

NOTE: Don't download them yet. Download them when I say so.

1. A tool called PSXMC. This is a powerful tool that can rip out any PS1 music and even PS1 prerendered movies! I'm going to show how to use it.

2. Another tool called Audacity. This converts the WAVE format outputted by PSXMC to a format called MP3 which players use.

3. A file called lame_enc.dll. It is a Direct Link Library and is needed some point here in the howto. Please save it to the C:\ folder, not somewhere else. DLLs are powerful enough to brick (damage) computers if saved in the wrong places. So please don't put it in the WINDOWS folder. wink

------------------

I will be using the game "Spyro the Dragon" as an example.

Insert your Playstation disc on your computer now.

------------------

Download PSXMC and unpack it to a folder. Then open the folder and you will see this:
1083_ScreenShot001_1.jpg
OPEN the PsxMC program.

------------------

It will ask you on what CD drive to use. Pick the appropriate CD drive. Usually, computers have only one CD drive. But some computers have two or more. Pick the right one.

BE SURE TO CHECK SPTI

Click OK.

-------------------

This should pop up. Be sure to click the AUDIO ONLY button.
1083_ScreenShot006_2.jpg

-------------------

Then click OPEN CD ROM.
1083_ScreenShot007_1.jpg

-------------------

A question box should pop up shortly.

Click NO.
1083_ScreenShot008_1.jpg

An CDAZ file was not found.
Is the CDAZ file in a server searched?

(Note that the tool was converted from Japanese, so the English isn't that good.)

--------------------

Make sure the settings match, then click START.
1083_ScreenShot009_1.jpg

--------------------

Now to wait.
1083_ScreenShot011_1.jpg

--------------------

Click it. 48 music tracks (streams) have been found.
1083_ScreenShot012_2.jpg

--------------------

Look at all the music tracks!!!
1083_ScreenShot014_1.jpg

--------------------

Start the conversion! big_smile
1083_ScreenShot018_1.jpg

--------------------

Long wait. Ugh. >_<
1083_ScreenShot019_2.jpg

--------------------

COMPLETE!!!!
1083_ScreenShot022_1.jpg

--------------------

CLOSE THE PSXMC TOOL.

Open the Audio folder. Notice that the filesize has rocketed into the hundreds of megabytes.
1083_ScreenShot025_1.jpg

You will see lots of wave files, usually beginning with the prefix STR.
--------------------

Download Audacity and lame_enc.dll.

Install Audacity, unpack lame_enc.dll on the desktop or the C:\ folder.

Open Audacity. Using Audacity, open a WAVE file located in the audio folder of PSXMC.
1083_ScreenShot031_1.jpg

--------------------

I opened STR0001.wav and I clicked the Audacity's play button. It was the music for the Artisans world. :: D

Okay, now to convert this to MP3 format.

Click FILE and then Export to MP3.

1083_ScreenShot033_1.jpg

NOTICE: Audacity will, on some point from here, ask for the lame_enc.dll file. Be sure to have it handy. I cannot photograph on how to do it because it will only ask for the DLL once, and you're fine and dandy forever and it won't nag you again. I added the lame_enc.dll a few months ago and it won't show me the box again. Good luck. smile

--------------------

I'll save it as Artisans Theme.
1083_ScreenShot034_1.jpg

--------------------

Then I filled out the blanks....
1083_ScreenShot037_1.jpg

NOTE: It isn't that important to fill the boxes in. However, MP3 players use this information, so you want to fill it in just to keep everything organized.

THEN CLICK OK. And then wait. Ugh, wait, wait, wait, WAAAIITT!!!

Lol. big_smile

--------------------

Oooohh! Behold the MP3 file!
1083_ScreenShot039_1.jpg

--------------------

Then repeat the Audacity part for the other WAV files, then take all the MP3s and transfer them in your player.

DONE!

--------------------

THE END.

By Doppel. If you have any howto requests, shoot me a PM! big_smile

You do know that this could be considered illegal since you can buy the music.

Not really. The music is bundled with the disc and you are doing this on the game discs you legally own. It isn't illegal. What you are doing is that you just take a CD you legally own and do what you want to it. iPods/MP3 players are like that, Take a disc, convert to MP3 and you're ok. wink

In fact, I talked to LoneKnight about posting stuff like this. He says as long as I don't whip up the MP3s for mass downloading, I'm ok! big_smile
