What if Insomniac had not sold the Series.

What would the next game have been like, How long would they have kept it on PS1.

Give me your thoughts.

Re: What if Insomniac had not sold the Series.

We'd be in a much better world with Insomniac behind the wheel.

But, remember why they sold the rights to Spyro. They got bored with Spyro. Even if they kept the rights, do you really think we'd see more? They might have just retired him.

Re: What if Insomniac had not sold the Series.

Personally, I think Spyro would've been ALOT better off.
VU pretty much messed up the series and Spyro himself (He looks all...deformed now and such).

Also, there would be no Ratchet and Clank if they kept making Spyro games! :omg:

Re: What if Insomniac had not sold the Series.

Spyro may not have had a future in the hands of Insomniac.  The way I see it, we should just go with the flow.  I kinda hate the look of the original Spyro, anyway.  Also, though Ripto's Rage was better in some ways than the original, all in all, IMPO, each successive game of the original trilogy was worse then the previous.

There are two kinds of people in the world.  We have those who need a life, and then we have those who are dead already.

Re: What if Insomniac had not sold the Series.

I'll pretty much go with the 3rd choice.
Why?
Well...the thing is for me that VU's games helped me into the Spyro Series.  I never was a fan of the PSX even though I got one, meaning I wasn't into anything Playstation had to offer, not Crash, not Final Fantasy, not Spyro...

I'm not bagging on Insomnaic, I've played the original 3, and they're good.  The first one was pretty well done, but got repetitive. Ripto's Rage for me was somewhat better. Year of the Dragon is a great PS game, though...when it comes to addiction level for me, A Hero's Tail, Shadow Legacy, and A New Beginning wins.

I dunno what will happen if Spyro stayed on Insomnaic, though, it could be good.  But that does leave a question for the Ratchet and Clank Series, even though I haven't played them. If Insomnaic didn't give Spyro to VU, Ratchet and Clank might not have made the scene.

Though, for me....I'd say it's okay.  Doesn't matter in my opinion, though it does leave me curious to find out what would happen to Spyro if he stayed.

Re: What if Insomniac had not sold the Series.

Aside from what's been said, it was Universal that held the rights to Spyro since the series' interception, not Insomniac.  While it can be nice to see the series being re-transferred back to them, we also need to take note of the following question - will they even be prepared to make a Spyro title?

I know that it can be tough to see games getting transferred to others' hands. But for some series, it can do them some good. Sonic the Hedgehog's latest great titles have mainly been the handheld ones, and they were developed by Dimps.  And I especially adored Mario's RPG/quest like titles; does the Nintendo in-house team have what it takes to make a game like Super Mario RPG on that scale without bugging Squaresoft to actually make the game themselves?

There are even some game franchises that are having problems under their hands of their creators. I'll set Banjo-Kazooie as an example - all of their games were established by Rare. However, somewhere around the Microsoft purchase, their games started to face a struggle to meet up with the quality of their predecessors. Even initial feedback that I saw of Banjo-Threeie saw just as many mixed reactions to how Banjo got rendered as did Spyro's successive new renders in the past four years or so.

On top of that, outside from Spyro, all of Insomniac's games have been of the futuristic variety, and that might have been the kind of game that the guys over there were initially interested in making a living out of in the first place.  I think if I was in their shoes, I might feel a little bit awkward and want to seek for more of a challenge.

Re: What if Insomniac had not sold the Series.

Not impossible, but improbible. They just don't want to. They sold it for the reason that they wanted to try new things. What reason would make them randomly buy it again? It's sometimes better to quit while you're ahead, and that's what Insomniac did with Spyro. They quit while they were still hot. As a result we still play these PS1 games.
