ok i hate to be a pain but i really cant get this to work! am i doing it at the wrong time? AArrrggghhh! could really do with it now. am in the burnt lands and having real  trouble with the elite enemy. hes killing me so quickly! 

I forgot, hit "pause" first.

Then do it the way I mentioned.

Hold down the L1 button.
Keep it held down.

Move the left joystick right, then right again.
Then down, and down again.

Then move the stick left, you should hear a tone.

right, right, down, down, left.

This makes Spyro and Cynder invulnerable.

ok now feel stupid!! have found my way to the skeleton thingys but i cant kill them. i just keep dying! dont spose you fancy giving me any tips do you? please. sorry to be a pain

Which system do you have? I could give an "invulnerability" cheat.

Otherwise just keep fighting until you kill all the ape skeletons.

Use up Cynders magic and then use Spyro for the rest of the fight. That's all I can recommend. So to recap, use Cynder's posino bombs whenever you can, and maybe a few shadow cloaks, and then use the grab where you swing the apes in a circle to ensure extra damage. Use Cynder first until she's weak, then use Spyro.

If you can, use fury. I did it first time, makes it a lot easier.

Ok...

Go in to the Hermit's cave, the one you open the door to.

On the opposite side of the river, is a cave, with climbing vines next to it.

Go into the cave, at the end is a T-junction.
Go left to get a big gem. (Forgot if it's a health or magic one.)

Then head back the way you came, keep going straight until you see a blue gem.
Get that, then take flight over the river, downstream to where you came in.
Climb the vines, then "wall run" to the ledges.
Kind of tricky, I had to start over several times.

Push down the tree.

Momentary climbing vines appear, they disappear if you stay on them for more than a second or two.

Climb those to more vines, go right, using wall run, to a high ledge.

Jump off that ledge and fly to the right.

There is an alcove where you'll battle ape skeletons, and then the Hermit will come out.
