I started to read the first one so I would get what the heck was going on... I couldn't get more than three or four chapters in.  The halting writing style made me twitch.

Then again, it's no worse than most of the vampire romances out there.  It's just more hyped, so it has a larger, more obsessive/annoying fanbase, and so gets more hate--if that makes any sense, which it did in my head.

I don't really care about it one way or another.  I'll probably never read the entire series, unless I just happen to have several days' worth of utterly empty time and they're conveniently sitting there. 0wo  But I don't think they're worth getting foam-at-the-mouth mad about, either.

Yes, there isn't much of a plot. I am aware that there are a few minor plot holes and that Meyer's writing style is far from fabulous. Yes, Bella is a totally obsessed Mary Sue who faints while being kissed. And no, I am definitely not in love with Edward Cullen now. In fact, I am almost at a complete loss as to what I did like about it.

Almost. I think the reason that I read on was that I could relate to the main character and narrator, Bella, not because she's "shy" or "clumsy" or "ugly" (Bella doesn't play that part very convincingly; she has four guys interested in dating her within the first 100 pages of the book) but because of her tentative, almost reluctant exploration into the world of relationships for the first time. I found myself wanting to read on to find out what would happen to the unlikely couple, even if the relationship itself wasn't very believable.

Although it is far from perfect, I'll be waiting for the book to come back to the school library, then I'll finish it and probably move on to the next one. It wasn't the best book I've ever read, but after all that I've heard about its obsessed fans and rather pointless story, I was surprised that it wasn't the worst either.
