Yeah. I'm not saying he didn't die, because clearly he did. The question was "How did he die?" to which the answer is that he let himself perish for Spyro and Cynder. That scene would've made me cry if Christina Ricci's voice acting hadn't been so bad.

As said before, Spyro turned dark because he was emotionally rattled by the very rapid departure of both his friend and mentor.
