Exactly what Neotoguy just said. He was brought back while the Mountain of Malefor was collapsing then he escaped. Shorty after Spyro defeated Gaul.

i dunno its this large rock pod thing and i can see a faint M shape on it
if anyone can get a zoom in on this section of the movie 2 see if im right plz do post a shot

i dont know if anyone has pointed this out yet but in the second trailer at around 35-40 seconds in theres a rather large pod / rock thing floating at the top and i think that its malefores lair
in this other pic from spyro's lair i think that it is the floating thing with the huge M carved into it
