Hit him from afar and dive under him to avoid his shots. This may not work every time so keep trying.

I can get past the 1st 2 battles but when I get to the flying part I cannot dodge his blasts and keep dying, I think I have 2 lives left.  Any tips?  I've tried flying higher than him, lower, etc. I don't know what to do...?
