The fact that Spyro and Cynder not only survived for three years but also grew and flourished inside that crystal seems to support my theory that they don't need food and can survive off the elements alone.

It depends on the dragons and the world setting, but I presume that you are talking here about the dragons from LoS specifically.

Personally, I think they are mildly omnivorous but they usually don't eat if they don't have to. Why? The games strongly suggest that a dragon can live on nothing but gems. We never see anything for them to eat anywhere in the games but we do see Spyro constantly absorbing gems. He does it without even thinking and he gets more energy from the gems, just like we do from eating food. This theory is even slightly backed up by the original games; Spyro never ate the sheep or other small animals he trampled/flamed, he let Sparx eat for him.

Also, what would Spyro have eaten growing up? He can't have eaten anything more than his dragonfly family ate (because any animal large enough to feed a carnivorous dragonling would be a very serious threat to the dragonflies). He might have eaten some plants (what little we've seen of his teeth suggest that he is omnivorous in the way that humans are, which means the majority of his diet would have to be plants).

Another bit of evidence that suggest dragons don't eat but live off gems and elements is the dragon temple itself. Nowhere in the Temple is there anything that looks like a place to store food. Since the dragons are elemental in nature, they probable augment the energy they get from gems with energy from the elements around them.

So, yes. I don't think the dragons eat, but they can if they want to or there's nothing else to sustain them. If they do have to stoop so low as to eating things, they can eat plant or animal matter, whichever is the most available, but most of their energy comes from gems and the elements of the world around them.

It makes sense what DragonWithinMe said. They probably eat plants and cooked meat to survive, but to use their powers, they require specific gems.
