the only thing i can think is, Zoe can do different kinds of spells, and she accidentally used the wrong one

and then was too scared to admit it.

Another level... Spyro saves fairies in Season of Ice. yet Ripto doesn't fight Spyro in GBA until Season of Flame. Grendor wasn't a filler villain, they came to power due to Ripto's weakened state without fairies.

... Man, after ya' brought up Mudada - a Dream Weaver Dragon - that kinda brings me back to this one comment I made over on Tumblr regarding Ripto's "Homeworld."

Never thought of that before and I gotta admit, that's pretty cool. Would make a great game theory story. The story of the real rulers of Avalar, the fairies.

They're up to something.

And now that you mention it, Mudada is starting to look like a pretty shady character too.

So the first time we meet Zoe, she introduces us to the Checkpoint/Save Progress aspect of the game...

Ripto has made several reappearances in other Spyro titles : Enter the Dragonfly, Season of Flame, Attack of the Rhynocs, and served as the "Series Representing Villain" for Ripto's Rampage/Cortex Conspiracy... But before that, we're shown that he had survived the final fight at the end of Ripto's Rage/Gateway to Glimmer, as evidenced by the epilogue from the same game, and from the next game in the original trilogy, Year of the Dragon.

Did Zoe -- and to some extent, possibly Elora as well -- end up saving Ripto in the long run?
I mean... It kind of would explain a lot.

He got sent back all the way to Glimmer, which is in Summer Forest.
He made it all the way to Winter Tundra ; but because he hadn’t gotten zapped since Glimmer, he got sent all the way back to the beginning.
Now that, ladies and gentleman, is every gamers nightmare if they’re attempting a no-save run.

More than likely : it was something the developers never even thought of.
But hey : who's to say we can't theorize?
