didn't Insomniac actually say somewhere that Spyro was 12?

It is stated that dragon eggs "arrive" every twelve years (to coincide with the chinese "year of the dragon"). As such it stands to reason that Spyro (along with all other dragons for that matter) would be some multiple of 12 years old in Spyro 3.
Whether dragons age like humans is left ambigous, but assuming that is the case Spyro would probably be just 12 in YotD and then (perhaps) 10 and 11 in the first and second games.

Of course there were dragon eggs to collect in Spyro 1 too so... that kind of speaks to that that happened either in direct connection to YotD or the previous dragon egg season. Or possibly those just hadn't hatched yet since earlier...?
This is probably just an inconsistency since Spyro 3 definitely wasn't planned at the same time that Spyro 1 was finalized though.

I always thought the same thing happens in the Ratchet and Clank series. It even works with his personality in that case. In the first one Ratchet is really childish and immature, and becomes less so as the series goes on

seeing all the fan bios for spyro, lot of people apparently think hes in his 20s or something but thats definitely not the case.

I don't see the problem people have with it. Carlos gave Spyro a goofy voice to go with his rather goofy persona.

I don't know about anyone else but I think the voice fits Spyro for this particular game to a tee. This may sound strange but I prefer voices that "fit" the character than voices that sound "good". I simply cannot imagine Kenny or Woods voices Spyro 1's Spyro, with the big teeth and goofy eyes. He's just too young for a "mature" sounding voice. Insomniac said they did intend for Spyro to seem cocky and full of himself so they changed voice actors, but yet they put sunglasses on him and made him gloat about Gnast's defeat. I don't think its the voice that made him sound cocky, Insomniac.

I still want to pretend Spyro's voice started breaking after the first game.
