Dawn of the Dragon is full of things like that. it makes sense on the surface, but it just has so many plotholes and errors. the models of the characters look a good 7+ years older, but they weren't supposed to age. the Well of Souls was supposed to be black rocks and rubble, but it looks like an abandoned offshoot of Warfang.

and if he had found a crack, you'd think Spyro and Cynder would have found it first when they first got stuck there. it's just odd.

i refer to the spoiler here which i still personally find funny.

I don't think EL looked at the previous game, or saw the design of the Well of Souls when they were developing the game. What also doesn't make any sense is how Hunter got in the Well of Souls. He could of found a crack or dug his way in, but they make it seem like he was trapped in there as well, which also wouldn't make any sense.

dude, i know, right? it doesn't look anything like the Well of Souls. the decorations on the walls and floors are (really) different, the layout is different, etc. it looks like something from Indiana Jones. nothing like the Well of Souls from TEN.

and i knoooooow it has to be a coherent "level" so people can actually play it, especially in the first level, but couldn't they have made it look any more like a collapsed mountain? it's supposed to be a bunch of rubble, but it's actually this huge - as you said - palace.

Am I the only one who thinks that in the beginning of DOTD that Spyro, Cynder and Sparks are no longer in the well of souls? Their surroundings look more like a underground palace than the well of souls.
