Judging by the first dragon in Dark Hollow as seen here:
I would venture a guess that Sparx is in fact "hidden" inside Spyro's head during these cutscenes. Perhaps try rescuing some dragons with him being blue, green and gone and see if it makes a difference?

I've been wondering about that yellow colour from time to time when playing O.o

Yeah, they're certainly not pre-rendered. If it was, they would surely have done something with the affine texture rendering.

Maybe they had two different models for Spyro, a gameplay one, and one rigged differently for more expressive animation, based on an earlier model with a very slight difference in the colour scheme, and then they didn't bother making them look the same in the end?
Or maybe the models have a limited number of colours, and they had to use one of Spyro's colour slots to use on all the dragon models? (I doubt it, really xD)

You're actually right, Stormy. I don't know if it was used in the case of this game, but a lot of games enhance the graphics during cutscenes, as only during gameplay is framerate imperative to be over 15 - 20 frames per second. If the game is playing a cutscene, they can get away with making the framerate lower, as it's like watching a movie; most movies are in 15 or so frames per second.

Maybe it has something to do with it switching to "cutscene mode" when you rescue the dragons. Like, since they only have to use preplanned animations, they put in some extra shading or something that they thought would make it look better.

I really have no idea what I'm talking about here, so there's a very good chance that this doesn't make any sense.
