As for The Legend of Spyro series, its darker setting doesn't seem to really fit the character of Spyro. So, they had to make him look and act more mature, like he'd grown since the first games. This move wasn't necessarily a bad move, but it led Spyro in a different direction.

And, then, later, Spyro was launched into a totally different direction once again. I admit, Skylanders is fun. (Judging from Skylanders: Giants, the only title in the series I've played.) However, it lacks the charm that the first three games had. In other words, the gameplay seems rather dry. By the way, I think that Skylanders Spyro looks like a cross between a small purple dragon, a goblin, and a bulldog.

So, I think that a fan game might be possible. But an official 'real' Spyro game? That probably won't happen for a long time, if ever. Judging by the success of Skylanders, a 'real' Spyro game would be less profitable because many children nowadays only know of Skylanders and are unaware of Spyro's past. If they saw a new 'real' Spyro game, they'd wonder what happened to the Spyro they know from Skylanders.

(As for fan games - plenty of people on this forum have programming skills, and there have been a few attempts at starting fan game projects over the years, but no one's ever actually successfully completed one.  )

Spyro outside of skylanders? Most likely not. The most we could hope for is a spin off game of the skylanders series akin to Sonic Generations, where skylanders spyro teams up with classic spyro...or something like that. Even then, we won't get that. Which, IMO, is too bad, since I had an awesome idea for a game like that which linked skylanders, classic and the legends of series all together into one continuity....but my friend who can code games sadly has no love for spyro and I know nobody who can do 3d graphics so making a game like that and offering it to activision is sadly out of the question.

As if Activision would ever even acknowledge any of the existing fanbases for their games.

has anyone heard anything recently about that big fan game that was in the works? they had a YouTube channel and some pretty convincing level layouts going, last i heard. it's not an official game, but it's a game.

I actually just heard and saw some videos of that on crash bandicoot (crystal wrath or something like that), had no idea it was happening with spyro to.

I am a Skylanders fan and like Skylanders Spyro. But that's not important now.

Skylanders is a cash cow. No one sees the need for the other Spyro's  to come back so I doubt it's happening. Because of the cash cow that is Skylanders. But I am okay with it. I miss Legend and Classic don't get me wrong but Skylanders has been good.

It is what it is. Sigh only way we get ether Spyro is from the old LOS Spyro Games and Classic Spyro Games.

Even though, they VERY WELL could. Skylanders and Spyro are pretty much different franchises. If they made a new "Spyro" title, while making "Skylanders" titles, nobody would really bat an eye. I guarantee that due to Insomniac gone multiconsole, and how they really need a game right now to develop that will succeed: If activision contracted insomniac to develop a new Spyro game, everyone in the fanbase would explode in joy. Although ive hated insomniac for what they did to the fanbase, and my dislike for their newer games, its always been my dream for them to return and make a TRUE spyro year of the dragon sequel.
