Fluoride (F−) is the anion of fluorine. Fluoride, like other halides, is a monovalent ion (−1 charge). Structurally, and to some extent chemically, the fluoride ion resembles the hydroxide ion. In water solutions, fluoride ion is a weak base. Fluoride ion occurs on earth in several minerals, particularly fluorite, but is only present in very trace quantities in water.
