Archlinux is actually really nice, as its super basic and lean, you just install what you need.

But it's not really a big deal. It came with Empathy messenger which doesn't notify me of emails or look as nice, but it works well enough.

Google Talk (which is pretty much the only Windows program I really care about getting for this computer) didn't work in Wine for me. I haven't tried any others.

You're probably using the application version, which is indeed Windows only.  There is a plugin version for iGoogle, gmail, etc, regardless of OS or browser.

It is free, but like I said it is quite a bit different than Windows in many ways, so if you're really used to Windows you might want to think about it a bit before just going ahead and installing it. You can try it out before you install if you boot from disk or a flash drive with Ubuntu on it.

Also, a lot of Windows applications you might want to use will not work on Ubuntu. You can't just go on the internet and install anything you want; there's a limited selection of programs that have been written specifically for Linux distributions. There are free equivalents to most programs I used on Windows, but sometimes they're not quite as good. I really miss Google Talk.

Great, I will try this new version in virtualbox, but I think I will stay with fedora 16. Which desktop environment is going to be as default in the new version of Ubuntu? Unity?

Unity is default, but you can easily install GNOME if you want to with this command in the terminal

There's also Kubuntu with KDE.  I don't think it's as stable, but it is great.

An operating system is a set of programs on top of a kernel that manages processes, memory, and user events. Everything that runs off of a general CPU requires some form of an OS, whether it is a server, a laptop, a router, or a micro controller.

I've got 11.10 on my netbook that I've had since 2008. It used to have Windows XP, but it was just getting so slow it was almost unusable.  So this was an easy fix. It was hard to get used to, though, since I've always used some version of Windows for the entirety of my computer-literate life.

The only thing that really annoys me about it are some little quirks with the interface like the menu bar on the side coming up when I'm trying to click the back button on my browser, the menu bar not coming up at all, or the menu bar sticking around too long. Yeah, they're all about the menu bar, so if they're getting rid of that thing completely I might have to upgrade just for that. Other than that it's great; I'm loving how it's not constantly bogged down with system processes.

Huh. I still have Windows XP and It's...well...*bleep*. I might want to look into this someday. If It's free that is.
