I thought Cynder ran away because she was drawn to the darkness in Malefor much like Gaul and the other monsters. She used to be a creature of darkness and the Chronicler said that dark creatures are drawn to it.

I thought it was because Malefor wanted her to be a unknown chess piece in luring Spyro and that having the apes take her would get two birds with one stone

i hate to say it, but Cynder was kind of emo in TEN. following suit, i guess she thought running away from the only safe place left would make her stop feeling guilty. (guilt > safety. priorities!)

as for the apes, i think that's because, uh... well...

OH YEAH! man, i almost couldn't answer that question. i was about to give up when i finally remembered this: in DOTD, that old crazy guy in the Valley of Avalar explains why they did that. the apes decided to follow Malefor because they wanted power. they followed him for that reason more than any true dedication to him.

and it would be interesting if Spyro had been taken! i guess that would have been the end of the story though o_o all they had to do was take him and kill him, and Malefor's mission probably would have been accomplished right there. all it took was 3 years without Spyro (from TEN to DOTD) for Malefor to take over the world. difference is, if Spyro had been taken, the wrong purple dragon would have been defeated
