Personally I think he still looks quite ugly in TLoS and I don't understand why they made that change, either. Unfortunately it wouldn't make much sense for them to use one of the older versions of Spyro in the merchandise since they're trying to promote the current series at the moment. I'd love it as much as anyone if they were still making merchandise for the old games, though. sad

I just think that if you think it's bad it could always be worse. I don't like skylanders at all and i am currently infuriated with these people and Seria intertainment, and that has a little bit to do with it; mainly because they made Spyro look as ugly as sin IMO. I mean if your going to make spyro into a lego set at least make it actual legos and preferable use the older version of him or at least the version used in TLOS series, because at least then he won't be ugly (or at least not as ugly. it is quite offensive to my aesthetic sensibilities that they used the skylanders version)

I was mostly talking about how people are taking offense at the Mega Blocks thing on the last page, and comparing it to the merchandise Universal made for the original games, but I guess I kind of got off-topic, heh.

The developers did make the toys that are required for the game, sure, but kids really like that. To people our age it seems like a stupid gimmick, but others look at it differently and really like it.

It's obvious marketing, yeah, but so is all merchandising, including the Spyro plushies and inflatables they made during the Insomniac era. They didn't make those just to make fans happy; they made them to advertise their brand and to make some extra money from it.  Same thing here.

On a slightly related topic, I'm curious what you guys would think about stuff like those TLoS Wendy's toys a while back, or the ANB school supply sets that you could get through mail-in order from certain snacks. Good or bad marketing?

The developers of a video game probably have little to no say in what merchandise gets released; they just make the game, and yeah, they probably come off as a bit more sincere and stuff because it's a smaller company with fewer people making decisions. If you want a more fair comparison, try Universal vs. Activision. It's the same thing: big companies making profit off a franchise they own  by selling merchandise.

So what, exactly, makes the Insomniac-era merchandise more "sincere" than these Mega Blocks? Is it the fact that it pairs Spyro with another brand?

Spyro, in terms of business practices, has just become another way to milk something for every dime it's worth. what i meant was with Insomniac, they didn't do that. they released the games, some merchandise, and let consumers have some money left over. Activision have no mercy, having all these things kids will absolutely need because they feature a purple dragon, and for some odd reason that's probably ridiculous but still valid enough for me, i take this extremely personally.
