If this is passed, any politician that supports it - any well-known politician, that is - will be a prime target of the inevitable backlash. This looks bad, too, since it's likely to be compared with the censorship enforced in places such as China.

Anyhow, I really cannot decide which side of the fence I stand - I really want to say that this issue is blown out of proportion, but then again, I don't have any real reasoning to say so. The move might've had intentions to deter spammers/cybercrime (which in this case I don't think this is going to be an effective deterrent), but in any case, the opposition from users all over the internet is quite clear...I would bet and hope that it's a firm, unanimous stance. I hope this bill will never materialize.

There's a thing called fair use. Because of Fair Use, creative sites like DeviantArt and SF would be unaffected by this law. Furthermore, for any case to be made in a court, the copyright owner would have to inform DOJ about the infringing site first, and then a suit would be brought up. It'd only happen if Vivendi wanted SF shut down, and theoretically, they already have the power to do that with the current DMCA.
