I use GIMP for texture hacks in Brawl. (currently working on Jazz JackDuck, inspired by a nameless extra in Bucky O'Hare) Photoshop is expensive, but there may be free trials. Just experiment with GIMP and you may eventually master it.

Photoshop for me... I need the plugins for making normals.

I also feel the filters are a lot more flexible. CS5 really set a gap between GIMP and itself, which I personally don't think they will be able to narrow ever again.

Cross-platform support is pretty shaky too. GIMP is still using X11 on OSX, and large images run extremely slowly in Linux.

PS sounds like a wonderful program for me to use, since I can't save
my .dds images in layers on GIMP 2. I'll open it up, edit the image, and
won't be able to save its layers, it'll just save the main surface. If anybody
knows how to work with many layers in GIMP 2, I would like help. I know
that Photoshop is better, but I'll need money for that.

Lol, yes it does if you purchase PS. GIMP has many similar features that, for the average person, should be sufficient. It's not any less user-friendly than Photoshop IMO. If you want an image editing program to be used for general purposes, save your cash and try GIMP. If you're more serious about your works and know how certain functions in PS can be advantageous to you, consider PS. More bells and whistles mean nothing if you can't make use out of them (or figure out how to use them).

Ive really only used gimp for about an hour a few years ago, and that was after I was comfortable with photoshop. I'll stick with photoshop because I know how to use it and use it efficiently, plus im sure adobe has a few one-ups with their professional design suite than an open source editor

I heard that Photoshop has much better options than GIMP, but costs a
whole lot more [say ... around $300]. But GIMP is free, with a bit worse
options. What is your take?

I don't know which one I like more, but I use a ".dds" plug-in for GIMP 2
so that I can edit the image files in Battlefield 1942. Somebody told me a
while back that Photoshop already has ".dds" file editing capabilities.
