I can imagine someone commiting suicide would have that effect. A, how shall I put it, acquaintance, got onto a roof only a little while ago. He got down later, and he was really only playing for attention, but it was a really big thing, the topic of conversation for weeks, even so. I can imagine the effect an actual suicide would have, even on the people not really involved.

But regardless, my post was more in reference to Swaffle's "society must witness tragedy to change its behaviour" hypothesis.

I agree with Aceedwin, bullying on that scale is unacceptable. However, no form of teasing at all is not a good thing.

I read something somewhere that when young children are teased, sometimes to the point of being upset, it helps them to distinguish the difference between 'play-fighting' and 'real-fighting'. Which is also what Aceedwin was on about. If a kid doesn't know the difference between 'fake' and 'real' then they willl either take a joke too far when they are older, or will likely snap at someone and start a fight when the person that was messing with them was obviously joking.
I've had something like that happen to me before. I was being sarcastic at this 12-year-old, not being mean or anything but you get the idea. I was teaching him in a swimming lesson and he said something on the line of 'these things are what babies use' and I replied sarcastically: 'Yeah, like your not a baby'. What did he then do? He flew off the handle with me. So, what did I then do? I gave him a life lesson. I told him to get over it, I was being sarcastic and he should learn to recognise it. I told him that he isn't actually a baby, so if someone says anything to him along those lines they are likely teasing you or are trying to bully you. So, you just take it, if someone is calling you a baby then that is obviously not true so you ignore their feeble attempts at degradation. It's also something that you don't go to teachers or parents to saying that it is bullying, because they will have a different idea to what bullying is and will take action that is likely too extreme for what the situation really called for.
I've had that plenty of times too... Parents asking me why I didn't take action when kids were bullying each other in front of me. And I told them I didn't do anything because it wasn't bullying, it was ribbing and a bit of that is a good thing because it toughens you up. If it went to far I would get them told. Seriously, people have no respect and trust nowadays.

Look, I can see it's morally wrong on most accounts to bully someone to the point of suicide, but that's a big statement to make there.

On a counter point, many people in my own school have come to terms with bullying as a required form of discipline. If those first years grow without being teased or bullied at all, inevitably they grow up into total *bleep*s. They will seriously terrorize the students that come after them, and that's the sort of bullying that causes suicides.

I had to post this, the "I hate humanity" monster loomed.
