Purple ... hmm. I'm surprised the Arbiter from Halo isn't purple [his old
armor before being turned into the Arbiter].

they made spyro purple because purple dragons cud get many abilitys and others cannot and they are really rare

If he was red, blue, green, or black, people won't recognize him.

But with him purple, people will remember him, like "hey, you remember that purple dragon", then people will get an idea who it is.

He was going to be green as said however the dev's changed it to purple as it he pretty much Cameo to the background and levels

Imagine if they'd made Spyro red or black? Or even rainbow?!, Purple is a color you don't usually see on dragons which I like. I do think if they'd made Spyro green, he would of been confusing cause he would blend in with everything else green.

I reckon because its kinda an odd colour, maybe because nobody would expect and awesome dragon to be purple. But i glad they didnt change his colour half way through the series.

I agree with cornys, purple is such an odd, hardly used color. It makes Spyro really unique, and plus, it doesn't tie into just one element, since he's a master of all of them. At least, that's my idea for LoS.
As for the earlier games... like it was said, green would blend too much. Purple stands out. There weren't a lot of purple dragons in the first game... Spyro was always very colorful.

They wanted to make him memorable. Who would remeber a red or orange dragon. Purple is a rarely used color and since nothing really is purple they wanted to make his be associated with something seen everyday. You name something other than Spyro that's commonly associated to be purple?

Insomniac wanted to restore the awesomeness of purple, which was not an easy task because of Pedosaurus-Rex. Fortunately, a small talking convertible was able to help restore purple's awesomeness.

Because of Spyro, purple is now one of my favorite colors. And I use to hate purple.
