We were meant to go back on the fourth of January, but by the fifth it was closed and has been for the rest of the week. :\

We have 13-14 school years:

Preschool (optional): Technically, you can be any age under 6 to go to this (even 1 years old), but usually it is ages 3-4

Kindergarten (optional depending on state): You either had to have finished preschool, or be 5-6 years old.

1st through 4th grade (elementary): Ages are 6-10 depending on grade.

5th through 8th grade (middle or Jr. High school): Ages are 10-14 depending on the grade

9th through 12th (high school): Ages are 14-18 depending on the grade (may go up to age 21 if person stays back).

Our colleges only look at our high school transcripts, not any time before that.

Unfortunately, because of the 'No Child Left Behind, the kids who don't know what to do in 1st through 8th grade, they promote them even if they don't do the work or learn anything. Due to that, kids over here usually fail in high-school if they are lazy during the early years. Teachers also need to teach on the lowest intelligence level in the school, so because of that small group of students who don't want to do any work, we students who actually want to get an education need to learn the alphabet every year through 8th grade...

Nice going Mr. Ex-president! No Child Left Behind was a great idea...

Dang... it's gone gone gone! I think back when I was in elementary school, it was 3 weeks off in winter. I'm not sure, but it feels just right. ;o

Nope. We have years.

Year 1 - age 5 - 6

Year 2 - age 6 - 7

etc...

The last one is Year 11 - age 15 - 16.

It just means kindergarten to grade 12.

Does the UK have k12 schools?

I wish I could go to college at 16. All we do is review, review, review... We learn nothing new...

Speaking of grades, do they go up from Kindergarden to 12th in the UK like they do here?

Well most of us go as soon as we finish school at 16 (or 15 for me, since I'm one of the youngest). Grades don't play an issue with WHEN we go.

It depends if you fail a grade or not, but usually it's like, 17, or 18. Come to think of it, 16's only a year less than 17, so I guess it could be possible in the USA, too.
But yeah, 17 or 18 are the common average.
