Why not just use the USB drive and unplug THAT instead of a cable in the wall, and take or hide your USB drive somewhere? Seems your complicating things if you ask me.

Hmmm... Just stumbled on this
I have to say, it is an awesomely cool mod. There are probably easier ways of hiding your data, but none quite as cool [I being ultra paranoid, and not worried about parents forcing me to divulge details, have all my hard drives and external drives encrypted, often then store encrypted files on them, and also have "fake" encrypted files <Files filled with random data>] but now you've made me want to add an extra layer of physically hiding the disks!
Damnnit. Now you've made me want to do more modding. Time to finally splash out on my own soldering iron at last.

Ok, just for the record. A megabyte is 1,000 kilobytes. I would have expected the metric users to at least get that right! As I'm a cable services technician I happen to know that the standard speed for cable modems is now between 3 and 15 meg. (or 3,000 to 10,000k)

If you look at you phone cable there is provision for six wires, and with a better phone socket (RJ11) you will find it also will allow six wires. If you only have one phone line coming into your home only the centre two are used, well that leaves us with four to play with without upsetting the telephone. Also when making up mine I put a female USB socket on inside, this means I don't have to break the casing on my USB drive or solder directly to it. I actually pulled it out again and slipped a 500GB pocket hard disk into the wall cavity instead for the extra space. Now if any one inadvertently attempts to use the socket with a regular phone it still works!
And only by the use of my special cable can the data + phone be accessed at the same time.
Ideally you could stick anything down there, a USB hub, hard disk, WIFI dongle or all of these at once. Use you imagination, because science has no limitations

Well, mr "cable services technician", I would've expected you to know that a byte is not the same as a bit and connection speeds are generally rated by bits/sec. So, while there's no way of a 10,000kbyte home connection, 20 Mbit ones are actually rather common in the Netherlands now, with 24 being te maximum before heading to optical cables.

What is inaccurately termed in industry a megabyte is in practice a mebibyte, or 1024kb. And in the UK it is getting rare to have below 8mbps connection. We're not up there with the Netherlands, admittedly, but even my mobile phone can get 3.2mbps here...
Anyway, an interestingly complicated idea, but fun nonetheless . Whoever it was said you could try putting the disk in another room altogether, though, the extention limit for USB is about 5 meters before the signal drops off rapidly so you might have problems there. Personally I just hide things in seemingly innocuous folders which look like systems folders

You made that far more difficult then you needed. This could have been done with no soldering and not destroying you flash drive. All you needed to do what take a usb extention cord, some flash drives come with them. Cut it in half on the side for the pc attach your phone cord (twist the wires together and electrical tap, or small cap). The other attach to the phone jack. And tada plug the drive into the exention cable and your done. No soldering and you can change the drive if you would Like.
