It'd be interesting to see what could be done were the wires of the phone wire (already run) used to take the connection to another phone jack in the house (as far away as possible) and then to connect the secret storage device THERE...way away from the computer.

Sure it is kinda pointless, as is the whole project...unless you got something to hide...in which case it is cooler to have it more "off site" and less intuitively connected.

your job would have been significantly easier if you had taken the female end of a usb extension on the back side of the phone cord. And then you could take the jump drive with you, or replace it, if you ever needed to.

also - heatshrink is your friend. as are connectors.
you could have done the entire project in 5 minutes with a usb extension and an rj11 connector like this:

Why not split an USB extension with the plug in end inside the wall so you can pull the drive out? Of course, the extra work you did to solder the drive to the wire is fun!!

You could get a 6 position RJ11 faceplate and have enough conductors to run the USB and the phone line at the same time. Having a phone plugged in could make this thing uber stealthy.

One other note. If this is to be for hidden storage, maybe you shouldn't post this out to the entire interweb?

It's funny when you seemingly brag about having a 1000kbit internet speed. Standard here in Netherlands is 20,000kbit, that's right, I constantly see downloads of 1.5 to 2.3 megaBYTE per second, thats 100Mb in less than a minute.... sweeeeet

and your internet speed is not the only thing thats smoking over there is it? lol I'm packing my bags!

For future reference, the wiring on the phone jack is green, red, YELLOW (not orange) and black. Also, if you wanted to save some time you could buy a crimp kit. Instead of soldering the phone cord and USB cable together, you can just clip the end off of your USB cable and crimp an RJ11 mod (that's the clear plug that goes into the phone jack) onto the end of it and I would use electrical tape or heat shrink and not duct tape. Great job though. It's great to see kids interested in this kind of stuff. I started doing stuff like this when I was about 12 yo. I'm a Systems Technician with at&t if you want to know. cool

Thanks again! I started tinkering with this since I was three or four. My mom is an engineer at Yazaki Torres and she thought me how to light up a single Christmas light with an AA Battery. Hooked on electronics ever since. cool

I think the whole reason no one is paying attention to trucrypt is because if someone saw trucrypt on your computer they'd know you were hiding something... the way he did it it's not to obvious that you're hiding anything.... deffinately a good job ^_^

A network plug alone would arouse enough of my suspicion (as a parent, what is obviously the authority addressed here) to take the thing apart. You wouldn't even have to cough up a password Laugh

You could use TrueCrypt as double safety net of course Laugh

And what about backing up sensitive Data (since this will most likely involve only text or pictures) online through various available services - you could even use google mail for that.

But I understand the fun you had tinkering with that, and to all non-geeks who ask the question "Why?":

BECAUSE WE CAN!
